My inspiration for this piece was the paintings they sometimes use on the front covers of classic novels like Jane Austen's works. And then when I started coloring this I made an obvious twist in the idea: never in these paintings are they women of color. Or whatever term you want to use. I have seen one version of Dickens' 'Little Dorrit' where one of the secondary characters had been cast as an African-American girl, but I guess in the authors' times they just didn't see hardly any non-Europeans. All that belonged to the slave trade and while there are mentions of characters being against that in the novels, you don't actually get a non-white character featuring in the novel.
