INDIGO
I wiped my sweaty hands on the sides of my jeans. The living room felt uncomfortably warm. I made my way towards the slightly opened window and breathed in the crisp September air. I felt my mother’s eyes locked on my back.
“Jude, honey are you..are you alright?” my mother asked. I slowly turned to face her. “Um, yeah mom, totally. Just a bit nervous that’s all”, I said. Mom got up from the lumpy, light blue couch and made her way to me. She stepped to my side and put her arm around my shoulder.”Aww, Jude don’t be. It will only be a few weeks. The poor girl needs a place to stay. Hey it’s not like she’s staying in your room.” She let out a small giggle. I felt her coffee breath warm up my cheek.
“Mom you don’t get it. I am going to be here alone with some stranger whose parents died. I mean c’mon! Cut me some slack. I know..I know I said I’ll do it. I’m just not sure If I can. Just please stay. Don’t go.”My throat tightened and I felt the burning tears build up in my eyes. I tried my hardest to fight them back. “Honey you know I can't. This is an important business trip. I’ll be leaving a soon as she –“, my mom was cut off by the doorbell. “Oh! That must be her, right on time!”,her cheerful voice filled the room. She hurried excitedly to the door. I felt my heart speed up as the creaking door slowly opened.
Standing there was a skinny, blonde haired girl. Her sandy hair fell like a waterfall of curls down her back. Her skin was so pale, she was almost see-through. The girl’s wide eyes were a deep indigo that stared blankly into our house. “Hey there sweetie, I’m Mrs. Carlton but you can just call me Pam. This is my daughter Jude,” she gestured toward me but the girl just stood there. ”Well um, I’m going to make my way now. Make yourself at home please. Oh wow, how rude of me! Jude dear, her name is Edith.” My mom stood there smiling as if waiting for the girl to say something, but no, there was just a still silence. “Well I’ll leave you two now.”She kissed my forehead and gave me a heartwarming hug. I wish I didn’t have to let go. My mom or “Pam” took her bags from behind the couch and hurried out the door. Now that was that. It was all me and Edith, Edith and me. We’d just have to see what awaited.
After getting her settled in it was time for dinner. Edith was sitting in a kitchen corner with her back to me. “Um Edith, are you hungry, I make great–“ “are you afraid of death?” Edith cut in. I was shocked by the
question. I didn’t have time to think of an answer before she continued talking. “I think its wonderful.” She turned to look at me, a demonic smile on her face. “What’s wrong Jude, we are friends aren’t we? It was just a question”.
She got up and skipped toward me. Edith got on her tiptoes and brushed my
cheek. With her eyes linked to mine she whispered “Yes, I’m hungry.”
Dinner went by quicker than I thought it would. Now it was past 12 and I struggle with my sleep. Edith’s voice kept on creeping in my mind. The question just eating me up inside. I started to sweat and decided to go down and get a glass of water. I carefully went down the dark steps. When I reached the bottom I looked up, only to find two bright eyes staring at me. It was as if she had been waiting for me all this time. “Jude, I got bored and I want to play. C’mon play with me. It’ll be lots of fun. I’ve played this game with mommy and daddy before. Though I think they were afraid. I had fun but they didn’t. I wish they would have enjoyed the game. I am positive you will won't you?” She leaned forward and kissed me on the cheek. Her lips felt like ice cold rose petals. She took my hands in hers. She whispered in my ear, “You aren’t afraid of death too are you?”
