The Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly approved an ordinance aimed at adding restrictions in the sale of anime and manga Wednesday. Under the new legislation, the industry will be tasked to self-regulate anime and manga containing "extreme" portrayals of sexual acts and crimes, and restrict sales of such merchandise to only people over the age of 18. The clauses on self-regulation and restriction will take effect starting April and July of next year, respectively. Many publishers opposed the move because of its threat to creativity and freedom of expression, and have publicly expressed their intent to boycott the Tokyo International Anime Fair 2011, to take place in March, in response.
