TV Tokyo Sues 4Kids Over Children's Card Games
According to an article from the Hollywood Reporter, TV Tokyo and Nihon Ad Systems are taking anime distribution company 4Kids to court. Why? 4Kids allegedly defrauded millions of dollars from the companies off of various profits from the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise.
In the lawsuit, TV Tokyo claims it turned up some questionable accounting concerning deals made with several companies, including Cartoon Network, FUNimation, and Majesco Sales Inc. The Tokyo-based network claims 4Kids received profits and "kick backs", but despite their agreement with 4Kids to receive 50% of the gross income made in any deal regarding the franchise, they never received any money from the alleged "secret deals".
Attempts to resolve the dispute failed, and as a result, TV Tokyo and Nihon Ad have terminated their contract with 4Kids and are now suing for over $4 million in damages, plus filing and court fees. For 4Kids, saying they went from the frying pan into the fire is an understatement.
