Take an ordinary, household item and then add the words "Made in Japan" to the label. Sure, there's a hip factor to owning something from the land of manga, but do the Japanese really make better household items? In this column we'll explore those Japanese products that you can use on a daily basis and that knocked our socks off.
Note: None of the products we'll feature in this column have any sort of business relationship with us nor do we collect a commission if you check them out. These are just products we like from Japan that we think can improve your day to day life.
Buckwheat Pillows
Imagine if you slept with your head propped on a bag of rice. You'd feel the individual grains shift around as you adjusted your posture and the whole would soon shape itself to the back of your head or to the side of your face. That's almost the feeling you get from sleeping on a Japanese buckwheat pillow, except buckwheat pillows are also surprisingly firm. And therein lies the benefit: A firm pillow that will keep your head elevated all night but with enough "give" necessary to make it a comfortable elevation. As a bonus, the buckwheat hulls in the pillow will also cool your head in hot summer months.
I've been sleeping on a buckwheat pillow for the last two weeks and I've literally never slept better, much more refreshed than normal in the morning. I've long been plagued with poor sleep and so far so great. If you suffer from any sort of sleep difficulties I highly recommend giving these pillows a try. They've worked for many and they could work for you too.
Here is a link to the brand of pillows I bought for myself (also available in Queen and King size).
