According to the folks over at Variety, distribution company GKids has signed a deal with Studio Ghibli to release theatrical versions of the studio's movies that were released between 1984 and 2002. This includes films such as My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Spirited Away. The Walt Disney Company will still hold on to the rights for home video releases of the works.
GKids has stated they plan to run Spirited Away and Laputa: Castle in the Sky on their 10th and 25th anniversaries, respectively, at the New York Film Festival, and are already planning theatrical releases of some of the films in select U.S. theatres starting next year.
