As some of you may have heard - Wikipedia users especially - Congress is discussing two dangerous new bills (SOPA and PIPA) that could wreck a lot of your favorite websites, theOtaku.com included.
Here's why it matters:
Let's say a lawyer at one of the major media companies decides they don't like seeing fan art or wallpapers of their intellectual property on our site.
With current laws, they have to file some paperwork with us before we have to act. Through that back-and-forth we can have some sort of a dialogue and perhaps convince them that fan art and wallpapers are OKAY. In the worst case scenario that we have to remove the work they requested, the site as a whole stays online.
With SOPA/PIPA, the companies are given so much vague and broad power that one complaint could potentially take down all of theOtaku without warning, for days or weeks at a time. It also makes us responsible for all your personal posts, so if someone links to a fansub in a comment we're treated as if we hosted the fansub in the first place.
Not cool!!!!!!!!!!!
We encourage you to learn more and to call your local representative to protest this bill. Google's protest page is a good start.
