This is our most ambitious site-wide challenge yet. We want to create a mobile wallpaper site that rivals any online and we want to launch it in the biggest way possible. But we need your help. This challenge doesn't have a deadline, take as long or as little time as you want.
Here's the deal: Submit 1,000 original iPhone wallpapers with this link. When we hit that number we'll launch the new iPhone Wallpapers site.
Some of you may have questions about this move so we've provided a brief Q&A below.
Why only iPhone wallpapers? How about Android/BlackBerry/PSP/iPad?
We have to start somewhere and the numbers clearly favor iPhone as that starting point. Half of our visitors who access our site via mobile use an iPhone or iPod Touch. What's more important, there's only one resolution to worry about. While we do receive a lot of Android traffic, it's split up among a ton of different devices, all with different resolutions and sometimes-confusing wallpaper specs. It's kind of a nightmare, though some Android users will be able to use the iPhone wallpapers fine. We do want to include iPad support but are waiting to see the specs on the iPad 3 first.
Will the iPhone wallpaper site be easier to browse with an iPhone?
It'll be the same as the rest of the site--for now. We want to do a strong push at some point in making all of theO more mobile-friendly, but it's a big, expensive undertaking.
Why not add mobile wallpaper support in the existing wallpaper site?
Most people who look for mobile wallpapers don't want to sift through desktop wallpapers and vice-versa, especially if they're on their mobile device. We also polled our community of designers and by a large margin they favored separating mobile and desktop wallpapers.
What do iPhone wallpapers look like?
Unlike desktop wallpapers, they're vertical - 640 pixels wide and 960 pixels tall. You can see a sample here.
What will people see in their backroom if I submit a mobile wallpaper?
For now, nothing. Your subscribers won't even know you submitted one until the site launches.
Is there a way to see currently submitted mobile wallpapers?
Not until the site launches, though we may cobble together a hack in the meantime.
Ok great! I'm in! Let's DO THIS!!!!!!!
Heck yeah!
