Now that we have a shiny new iPhone Wallpapers site, an issue has emerged that we need your feedback on.
You see, there are two types of iPhone wallpapers: Those that are designed for the "lock" screen and those that are designed for the "home" screen. They're both the same size but lock screen wallpapers are optimized differently than home screen wallpapers. We want to give people an easy way to find both, but there are two options we can choose.
Here's an example of both types:
Home Screen:
The main image takes up the entire space.
Lock Screen:
The main image is optimized to appear closer to the center.
Option #1: Treat Them Individually
Artists can specify their submission as either a home screen iPhone wallpaper or a lock screen iPhone wallpaper and visitors can filter between the two while browsing.
PROS:
- If you only want to design a lock screen wallpaper you can ignore the home screen version
CONS:
- Making matching pairs of wallpapers is harder. If you want to make two versions of the same wallpaper, one that works for the home screen and one that works for the lock screen, then it has to be two separate submissions and you have to manually link them together, which is kind of a pain
Option #2: Treat Them as Pairs
Every artist must submit a home screen wallpaper. If you want to make a lock screen version then you can optionally add it as a "companion" wallpaper.
PROS:
- Making sets of wallpapers is easy and organized. If a visitor likes your home screen then they can easily download the lock screen as well and have a matching pair
- Guarantees that every lock screen has a matching home screen
CONS:
- While you can still make a stand-alone home screens, you can't make a stand-alone lock screens so there's extra work involved
- The thumbnail for your work will be the home screen one and not the lock screen one
This is a crucially important issue. Artists and fans: What are your thoughts?
