One of my friends recently gave me the DVD box set of Revolutionary Girl Utena, an old-school anime that blends magical girl silliness with surreal symbolism. He said that I couldn't call myself an otaku without having seen it. "Yeah, yeah…" I rolled my eyes. After all, the cover had the tagline "From the creator of Sailor Moon" and I've always been more of a Kame-hame-ha "that's impossible!" type of guy. It only took me a couple episodes to appreciate the show's incredible creativity and dark depths. Now, I'm on episode 31.
This week's discussion question: What's your favorite anime that few people have watched or even heard about?
