New City Ordinance Cracks Down on Ecchi
The harem manga Welcome to Sugarpot might not be well known in the West. In Tokyo, however, it became the first casualty in a new city ordinance prohibiting the physical sale of ecchi manga deemed too perverse in content. The national assembly analyzed Sugarpot and deemed it to be "excessively disrupting of social order," restricting its sale to digital only. As of the last year, the national assembly has only assessed three manga. Link
Naruto Joins Fighting Game Roster
Shippūden style Naruto Uzumaki will be the fourth character to join J-Stars Victory Vs., a fighting game based on the greatest shonen characters of all time. Already revealed to be playable characters are Monkey D. Luffy of One Piece, Son Goku of Dragon Ball Z, and Toriko of Toriko. Shonen Jump readers will vote for more characters in the coming months. The Boss is Back
Last December, game producer Hideo Kojima revealed a trailer for his latest project The Phantom Pain. As predicted, the game is actually the tenth installment in the Metal Gear Solid franchise, entitled Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. The chronology takes place shortly after the game Peace Walker and focus on the nine years that follow.
Manga Take On A New Job
Mari Yamazaki, the mangaka behind Thermae Romae, premiered her newest manga, Steve Jobs, on Monday. Based on the biography by Walter Isaacson, the manga’s introduction shows the former Apple CEO asking Isaacson to write his bio in 2004, which Isaacson refuses. Isaacson changes his mind after Jobs develops pancreatic cancer. The manga will run in Kodansha’s Kiss magazine Link
Miyazaki Film Receives Official Release Date
Hayao Miyazaki’s latest, Kaze Tanichu, has been given an official release date of June 20th. While it first seemed that Isao Takahata’s movie, The Tale of Princess Kaguya, would appear with it as a double feature, film distributor TOHO pushed the Miyazaki release to "this fall." Link
New Manga Studies Friendship, Cultural Phenom
At the Tokyo International Anime Fair, a series of flyers went around announcing the newest manga series for Pucchigumi magazine. My Little Pony ~ Tomodachi wa Mahō is a completely original story based on the animated show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. The official Japanese dub premieres Tuesday on TV Tokyo.Link
Hard Rock, Hello Kitty, and Hub
What seems like the most unorthodox team-up ever is actually a legitimate show. The collaboration between hard rock legends KISS and iconic character Hello Kitty will spawn a TV show for Hasbro's television channel, The Hub. Kiss Hello Kitty follows "four Kiss x Hello Kitty characters living their rock 'n' roll dreams and bringing pink anarchy to every situation they are in." Gene Simmons will produce. Link

On April 27, programming block Toonami will revive its first original series, IGPX: Immortal Grand Prix. Developed by Production I.G., the racing mecha series ran for one five-episode OVA and two full seasons before low ratings forced its cancellation in 2006. The time slot is TBA Link
