17th Tezuka Osamu Prize Winners Announced
The seventeenth annual manga awards, named after legendary manga creator Osamu Tezuka, were announced this week. According to a panel of esteemed judges, the winners were:
- Grand Prize: Yasuhisa Hara’s Kingdom
- New Creator Prize: Miki Yamamoto’s Sunny Sunny Ann!
- Short Work Prize: Yoshiie Gōda's Kikai-jikake no Ai
KyoAni Dives Off The Deep End
Studio Kyoto Animation has announced the plot to their newest anime, Free!. The story centers around a group of friends who belonged to a swim club, parted ways, and then reunited years later.
Back to School...Again
Mangaka Tohru Fujisawa, the man behind Great Teacher Onizuka, returns with another teacher manga. Kamen Teacher BLACK is the sequel manga to Kamen Teacher and tells the story of a mysterious teacher who enters the world of an elitist high school where money and prestige are everything. Link
MMOs Never Truly End
Sword Art Online was one of the most popular anime last year so it's no surprise it will receive two sequels this year. Sword Art Online Progressive will detail the journey Kirito went through to beat the one hundred levels of Castle Aincrad. Sword Art Online Girls Ops will feature the characters Lisbeth, Silica, and Leafa in their own adventure. Link
The Trail We Walked That Day
As part of the well-known hiking trail season held in Japan, the Chichibu Railway of Saitama announced several new hiking paths based on the anime Anohana. Much like other series, fans began flocking to the Chichibu area where Anohana was set while the show was being broadcast. Link
Tezuka Adaptation Delayed
A film adaptation of Osamu Tezuka’s manga Buddha will be pushed to 2014. It is to be the second in a trilogy that began in 2011. The 1978 manga told the story of Siddhartha, the founder of Buddhism. Link
Invasion of the Maids
California-based company Dearie wants to bring the maid cafe to America and needs your help. Though plans were announced back in 2012, executives at Dearie want to know exactly what fans want from the restaurant through a survey. Expect a site in Los Angeles by summer with possible New York and Boston chains to come. Link
Brit Band Hits Big In Japan
Alternative rock stars Muse released the music video for their latest single "Panic Station." The band describes the video as "cowboy ravers on the streets of Tokyo." All scenes were filmed in the Shibuya district of Tokyo during their 2012 tour. Warning: minimal strong language.
