I.G. Release Giovanni’s Island Teaser
Production I.G. returns to the basics with hand-drawn animation in their latest work, Giovanni’s Island. Directed by Mizuho Nishikubo (Video Girl Ai), the film is based on the real accounts of two brothers in the last days of WWII.
Jin-Roh Remake A Go
Back in January, Korean director Kim Jee-woon hinted at a possible live-action adaptation of the 1999 anime film, Jin-Roh - The Wolf Brigade. Thanks to a $10,000 grant from the Busan Film Fest and backing from film company CJ Entertainment, the project has been all but green lit. Link
Newtype Anime Awards Winners Announced
Newtype Magazine has announced the winners in the third annual Newtype Anime Awards for 2013. The big winner was Attack on Titan, taking home seven awards including Best Direction for Tetsuro Araki and Title of the Year. Other winners included Gargantia on the Venderous Planet’s Chamber for Best Mascot, Steins;Gate Déjà Vu for Best Film, and Love Live! for Best Character Design. Link
Kon Returns in Re-Release
Despite his short filmography, director Satoshi Kon is considered to be an icon in the history of cinema. Nearly three years after his passing, his second film Millennium Actress makes its Blu-Ray debut. Included in the release are original trailers, a text from film critic Ryusuke Hikawa, and a commentary track featuring Kon and the three lead actresses. Link
The Bane of Haruhi
A forthcoming work by manga-ka Teru Arai seeks to be the first "anti-Haruhi Suzumiya" light novel. There’s No Haruhi in My Classroom follows Yū, a boy who, despite protests from friends, rejects the entire concept of the famous franchise as farce, saying that ordinary people are more interesting. Interestingly, Haruhi’s original creator Nagaru Tanigawa fully supports the work. Link
2013 Anime Gets Sequel
Running alongside names like Attack on Titan and The Flowers of Evil, Gargantia on the Venderous Planet premiered in the 2013 spring season to initial acclaim. The final episode of the anime brought the news that a second season is already in the works and should premiere next year. The announcement was made via the anime's Twitter account. Link
Return To The Magic Kingdom
After eight years of waiting, Square Enix will officially give details regarding Kingdom Hearts III this month. Director Tetsuya Nomura believes The Walt Disney Company will be willing to relinquish the rights to Marvel and Star Wars characters, even further expanding the roster. Link
Vampire Manga To End After 10 Year Hiatus
Bisco Hatori announced in the November issued of LaLa DX magazine that she will end the manga Millennium Snow, which ran from 2001 to 2002 and resumed in 2010. The story involves a frail high-school girl who falls in love with a vampire. Hatori is best known for her work Ouran High School Host Club, which replaced Millennium Snow as her top priority until its end last year. Link
Zombie Manga To End As Well
Manga artist Sacchi has announced that the end of the Is This a Zombie? manga will occur on November 9. The story, written by Shinichi Kimura, tells of the death of Ayumu Aikawa following a string of serial killings. He is resurrected by a young necromancer and in the process steal the powers of a magical girl. The manga inspired two anime series and an ongoing spinoff manga. Link
The Business of Otaku
According to the Nomura Research Institute (NRI), the otaku lifestyle means big business for Japan. A survey of nearly 10,000 participants estimates there are roughly 1.72 million otaku in Japan with a market share of 441 billion yen. The study also redefined various groups of otaku by rate of obsession. Link

Many would argue Hatsune Miku’s concerts aren’t live because they need the vocal track to be recorded. Yamaha has a retort. They have created the Vocaloid Keyboard, a piano interface meant to simulate Japanese singing in real time.
RIP Tomoyuki Dan
Actor Tomoyuki Dan passed away on October 10 from a heart related issue. He was 50. Dan began his career in 1987 as a star of theatrical productions. His first film role was in Madadayo, the final film of acclaimed director Akira Kurosawa. His anime career included Kisame of Naruto Shippūden, Asher of Mobile Suit Victory Gundam, Orihara-sensei of Air Gear, and Ishikawa of Ghost in the Shell: Arise. Link
