Inside Look At Miyazaki’s Samurai Manga
Two weeks ago, we reported that Hayao Miyazaki has begun to draw a manga as part of his post-retirement plans. This week, NHK provided a closer look. During the program Professional Work Style, Miyazaki was filmed detailing by hand an intricate fight scene for his manga. Link
Manga Special To Receive Anime Adaptation
When it was announced that Yuki Urushibara’s manga Mushi-shi would return for a two chapter special, it was clear that people were excited. Prepare for even better news. Hiroshi Nagehama, fresh off his work with The Flowers of Evil, will make his return to the series to direct a one-hour anime special based on this new story. The adaptation premieres January 4. Link
Toonami Makes Another Big Announcement
It seems Toonami is just abuzz with activity, between a movie month and two anime premieres in January. Their most recent announcement is the premiere of 2011’s Blue Exorcist in March. This comes on the tail of the new Blue Exorcist film and English DVD/Blu-Ray release of the original anime. Link
Manga Giant Celebrates Milestone With Newspapers
One Piece recently surpassed the incredible milestone of 300 million copies in print. To honor their conquering of the manga market, they have launched Sanoku ThanX, a media campaign to include full-page adverts in some of the biggest newspapers, including the New York Times, the China Daily, and papers in 47 Japanese prefectures. Publication Honors 140 Years
In other newspaper news, the Shinano branch of Manichi Shimbun, one of Japan’s largest publications, commemorated 140 years of publication with a 10-minute film by comedian/animator Tekken. The Story of a Family tells of a young man’s dream and the daily sacrifices his parents make, as played through a newspaper reel.
Manga-ka Reassures Fans After Stroke
Shuho Sato, known for his manga Give My Regards to Black Jack, was hospitalized on Tuesday after a sudden stroke. He assured fans on the social site Niconico of his health and maintains he has recovered, despite a minor headache. Sato will remain in the hospital for further monitoring for the time. Link
Manga Seeks to Prevent Crime
In Tokyo, one of the challenges facing the police force is the human trafficking and illegal adult industries that permeate throughout the city’s former red light districts. In response, the MPD have begun distributing manga pamphlets in Chinese and Thai, describing the consequences of overseas students taking unlawful jobs. Link
