Sailor Moon: Crystal

Plot: Usagi is your average, hungry, teen-aged girl until she comes across a cat named Luna that unlocks her latent powers as "Sailor Moon". Usagi looks for other senshi to combat the forces of a mysterious enemy that is searching for the legendary Silver Crystal. (So far, the plot is very repetitive, and conflicts are dull. C+)

Characters: I think this is where the reboot really falls flat. The relationships between the girls feel forced and contrived. C+

Art & Animation: B-

Voice Acting: B+

Music: B-

Objectionable Content: mild

Other: I know I'm probably going to get some backlash for this, but... I am so disappointed in this reboot -- more disappointed than I thought I would be, considering that it's an anime I was only really into for a brief period of time. The original was so fun and full of life, and this one feels like it's just trying to cover material.

Recommendation: 2/5

Aldnoah.Zero

Plot: When the princess of Mars comes to Earth on a diplomatic mission, chaos breaks loose: in what appears to be an act of terror, the princess and her escort are attacked. Believing that the princess is dead, Mars ruthlessly attacks Earth with their Aldnoah drive-powered mechs-- leaving Earth's defenses terribly outmatched. Raw recruit Inaho and his friends are forced into the fighting to protect civilians, and when they come under attack by one of the Martian aristocrats, the kids discover that the Martian princess is still alive. (B+)

Characters: Many of them are quite flat. (B-)

Art & Animation: A

Voice Acting: A-

Music: Sometimes overdone or has vocals that pull you out of the scene (A-)

Objectionable Content: Blood, profanity

Other: The story is pretty much things we've seen, with a very political Gundam-esque war theme. The main character is extremely drab. And, even though the series showed promise, unfortunately... it doesn't get much better.

Overall Score: B+

Recommendation: 2/5

Sword Art Online II

Plot: The newest VRMMORPG craze is "Gun Gale Online", a shooter where a player can earn real money in tournaments. When two players are mysteriously killed -- seemingly after being shot by someone within the game -- Kirito is called to investigate. (A-)

Characters: The ones in the spotlight are handled well. (A-)

Art & Animation: Upgrade! -- A

Voice Acting: A

Music: A

Objectionable Content: Profanity, suggestive/sexual material, blood

Other: This can barely be called "Sword Art Online" anymore, since the focus of the new season is "Gun Gale Online", but, anyway... I guess that's why I'm giving SAO II its own review.

There's some pretty interesting aftermath from SAO brought into the mix in this season, and newcomer Sinon has a fun dynamic going with Kirito. Characters from season 1 have appearances throughout, but thus far, they're not active -- and that includes Asuna, which is a bit disappointing, since the first season's second arc has already really devalued her as a character. That aside, this one's still an interesting watch.

Eureka Seven

Plot: Renton dreams of escaping his mundane life with his mechanic grandfather, and when LFO pilot, Eureka, comes to the shop, bringing trouble behind her, he gets his wish -- he is brought into the Gekko State, a group of pilot-mercenaries that he has always looked up to. But he soon finds out that the Gekko State isn't all it's cracked up to be. (There's a lot more to it than this, but it's rather convoluted. B-)

Characters: B+

Art & Animation: A

Voice Acting: A

Music: B+

Objectionable Content: Blood, profanity, sexual content

Other: I tackled this series after a friend recommended it to me. As I said up in the "plot" section, there's a lot of stuff going on in this series, and it can get pretty confusing. There's Renton and Eureka's relationship, the military being after Gekko State, conflict between humans and these strange beings known as "scrub coral" (the most confusing part) and a bunch of smaller plots. There are some really good parts and some parts I really disliked or found unnecessary. So this series is kind of a mixed bag, and on top of that, you come out of it scratching your head.

There's a manga too, but I've only read the first volume.

Shining Hearts: Shiawase no Pan

Plot: Rick, a young swordsman who washed up on the shores of Wyndaria, now works at a bakery with his friends, Airy, Amil and Neris. The island is peaceful until a girl bearing a powerful treasure washes up on shore... (B-)

Characters: Sadly, the main character is as flat as cardboard, at least at the start. The supporting cast isn't much better. (C)

Art & Animation: B+

Voice Acting: A-

Music: Doesn't really draw attention to itself as good or bad (B)

Objectionable Content: mild

Other: This is based on a video game in the same series as "Shining Tears" and "Shining Wind". I've never played any of the games, but perhaps the dry characterization is a result of having a blank slate as the player's character. Early episodes are also somewhat uneventful.

Since I haven't really watched that far yet, I'm holding to the hope that it gets better, as there are elements introduced that have potential for development.
