Assassination Classroom (Ansatsu Kyoushitsu)

Plot: An alien monster that has blasted a hole in the moon is now the homeroom teacher for a class of problem students. The government is offering a hefty sum to anyone who can assassinate the monster before it does the same to Earth -- and the task has fallen to class 3-E! (Definitely something a bit off the beaten path -- B+)

Characters: B

Art & Animation: B+

Voice Acting: Not so much a question of the acting itself, but I'm not a fan of some of the casting choices. (A-)

Music: Not outstanding for the better or worse (B-)

Objectionable Content: Profanity, suggestive/sexual material, blood

Other: The comedy/action manga has only recently been released as an anime series, and I've mainly been reading the manga. It's weird, but in a satisfyingly fun way. (The antics of the alien/monster (dubbed "Koro-sensei") are a show in themselves.)

Overall Score: B

Recommendation: 3/5

Sword Art Online II

Plot: The newest VRMMORPG craze is "Gun Gale Online", a shooter where a player can earn real money in tournaments. When two players are mysteriously killed -- seemingly after being shot by someone within the game -- Kirito is called to investigate. (A-)

Characters: The ones in the spotlight are handled well. (A-)

Art & Animation: Upgrade! -- A

Voice Acting: A

Music: A

Objectionable Content: Profanity, suggestive/sexual material, blood

Other: This can barely be called "Sword Art Online" anymore, since the focus of the new season isn't "Sword Art Online", but, anyway... I guess that's why I'm giving SAO II its own review.

There's some pretty interesting aftermath from SAO brought into the mix in the "Gun Gale Online" arc, and newcomer Sinon has a fun dynamic going with Kirito, while Asuna and other secondary characters take a back seat. Later in the season, however, the other characters take more of the spotlight in two out-of-place story arcs that don't really add to the overall plot or have the sense of urgency that SAO and GGO had.

Overall Score: A

Recommendation: 3/5

The Seven Deadly Sins (Nanatsu no Taizai)

Plot: When the kingdom of Britannia is taken over by the Holy Knights who were supposed to protect it, Princess Elizabeth seeks the aid of the Seven Deadly Sins -- evil knights who were said to have tried to overthrow the kingdom in the past and were supposedly eliminated... (A)

Characters: A

Art & Animation: A-

Voice Acting: A

Music: B

Objectionable Content: Blood, sexual innuendo/fan service, profanity

Other: Based on a manga of the same name. I'd heard good things about it and was curious to give it a try.

The anime is fun and has a good story and good characters, but it can go a bit far with the blood and fan service at times.

Overall Score: A-

Recommendation: 2.5/5

Yona of the Dawn (Akatsuki no Yona)

Plot: The kingdom of Kouka is at peace until Princess Yona's beloved cousin, Soo-won, kills the king and seizes the throne. The shell-shocked princess suddenly has to flee for her life with her bodyguard, Hak, and Soo-won's followers are never far behind... (A-)

Characters: A

Art & Animation: A-

Voice Acting: A

Music: B+

Objectionable Content: Blood, profanity, innuendo/suggestive themes

Other: This is based on a manga of the same name, which I have only read a little bit of. So far as I can tell, the plot of the anime follows pretty closely.

Yona is mostly a drama/romance, but has some well-timed comedy to keep it from being too dark.

Overall Score: A-

Recommendation: 3.5/5

When Supernatural Battles Become Commonplace (Inou Battle wa Nichijou-ke no Naka de)

Plot: Five friends in the literature club suddenly develop superpowers. Six months pass, and they have yet to use their powers to save the world. Instead, they go about their normal day-to-day school lives usually using their powers for gags. (Nothing special here in the way of overall plot. B-)

Characters: B+

Art & Animation: A-

Voice Acting: A-

Music: B+

Objectionable Content: profanity, mild blood, fan service/suggestive themes

Other: This is a kick-back-and-relax kind of show that offers lots of laughs and a little drama.

Overall Score: B+

Recommendation: 2.5/5
