Hypothetical

(This is a hypothetical scenario. If you're lost, check White Symphony Brigade (WSB) and you'll understand.)

I knocked on the door with the back of my hand.
The doorknob turned and the door swung open with an unfortunately audible screetch, hinting to the age of the disinigrating and smelly dormitory we'd found ourselves in.

"Hey." I say walking past the fuzzy pink rug to my side of the room dumping my heavy back pack on the ground putting my sweaty gym clothes in the laundry basket and hanging my toiletries bag on the hook in my closet. There is no response. It wasn't like I was expecting one, anyway.
I closed the closet with a sigh and looked at my roommate, her back was to me as she worked at her desk-under-loft. "We need to talk," I said flatly.
"About what?" She asked, not turning to look at me. I made a face, she couldn't see me anyway.
"About this." I replied just as vaguely crossing my arms. She hesitantly turned to look at me, and her face froze in her signature expression that lay somewhere between "I don't know what you're talking about" and "Are you stupid?"
"You've been giving me to cold shoulder for about a week, so what's going on?"
"I've been busy." Came the non-chalant reply.
"Bullshit. Come on, Nikki. Seriously? I'm not stupid, regardless of how you look at me. You don't reply to me when I talk to you, and it does nothing for the weird atmosphere in here, so what's going on?"
"I honestly have a lot of things to do, and I think that you might be holding me back from doing the things I have to get done from pre-med. I'm sorry if it seems like I've been ignoring you."
I rolled my eyes, "you and me both know things are only deterrants if you let them be." She looked at me for a minute, a little annoyed.
"Whatever." She turned back around to continue doing whatever she was working on.
"I'm not done." I said with a laugh of disbelief.
"Well, I have to get back to work, so please make this fast." My face was frozen in a sardonic smile.
"No problem. I'll make this simple, you're a hypocrite and a bitch, how's that for short?" Her, "are you a retard/ what are you talking about?" face was back. I turned my back to her, sat down at my own desk and turned on the computer.
"What? You're going to say that and not finish?" She demanded. "You're so damn passive aggressive!"
"HAH!" I laughed, turning to look at her with a steely expression, "you're one to talk! What's with the cold shoulder thing, eh? Isn't that a little passive aggressive? Don't tell me about being that way, when you can't help but to be that way yourself!"
"I am not passive aggressive, and I'm also not arguing with you. I'm too busy for this."
"Well, not only are you in denial, but you're also trying to start something. If we leave things like this, there is no way we can continue to live with each other for the next five weeks. I sure as hell don't want to move this bed out of here, and neither do you, so we're stuck with each other 'til the end of April, and then we'll be done with this whole business, but until then, you're going to listen to what I have to say, and then you can to back to your biology study guide."
She stared at me.
"Well?"
"For starters," I started smoothly, "I honestly really thought we were friends, so are we?"
There was no response.
"I'm taking that as a 'no', so what happened?"
"You're my roommate before you were ever my friend." Was the response. Ouch.
"Okay, so that would explain all of the problems I'm having with you right now." I continued on without a beat, "first, you went to Copper River to celebrate Heath's birthday without me," I ticked off one finger, "then you try to play down the zoo trip yesterday like I didn't want me to go in the first place, and after you got back from your day trip, you decide to have a movie night with Haley SEEING that I was alone with nothing to do," I put down two more. "You know, an invitation would have been nice."
She stared at me for a while more, "I don't need to give you a play-by-play, anyways you didn't want to go to the zoo, so I don't get why you're mad."
I threw my hands in the air, "The play-by play is not the point. They're my friends, too Nikki and I've obviously been kicked out of the picture... AGAIN."
"Well, go hang out with your own friends... or are you so busy hanging out with mine to make any of your own?"
"Wow, did you really just say that? Are you really that greedy? Honestly, my sister is the only one who can use the, 'you have no friends' insult on me. You haven't received that honor, so don't go there with me unless you're asking for a bigger argument that can't be settled over tea and crumpets."
"What if it's true?"
I stared at her, "I have more friend problems than you'll ever know about. Those aren't my fault, those are the wrong choices I've made to allow those people to be my friends."
She didn't say anything for a while again, she seemed to be thinking about telling me the cornerstone of the ordeal.
"I feel like... they like you more than they like me." She said, almost a whisper looking down at her hands. Then she looked up and glared at me, my face was frozen in surprise.
"Honestly? Really, Nikki? Patrick was worried about you a lot yesterday, and Heath only made fun of me before because I was a freaking pansy, not because they liked you any less. Don't worry about that if that's all this is."
She didn't say anything for a while, "that's all I had to say, you can go back to work now."
I turned back to my computer and typed in my internet password.
"The truth is," she said, "I've had bad experiences with friends, too. You aren't the only one. That's why... that's why I was doing the whole cold shoulder thing. I was scared you were going to steal them from me."
"They're people, not pieces of meat to be fought over." I told her, "I liked them, and I wanted to hang out with them. That's all." I didn't say anything for a while and checked Blackboard. Nikki went back to her study guide.
"Are we going to be able to live with each other for another five weeks?" I asked absently.
"As long as you don't tell them what I just told you we should be fine." Nikki replied.
"My lips are sealed."
