On Reviewing Films

I thought I'd share this article I read today on movie reviews: Confessions of a Critic: The three main blind spots and biases in movie reviewing

It's an interesting article where the author looks back on films he's reviewed, and has since regretted some of his past reviews. (I never noticed that about Titanic. Also, his Groundhog Day example reminds me of my Ergo Proxy article on existential boredom.)

I don't think #2 is a problem at all when you're simply watching something for your own entertainment. However, I can see how it can be a problem if it sways your evaluation when doing a movie review. #3 could be called "The Near Sighted Effect", when you just simply miss a general theme or crucial element working away inconspicuously. There could be many reason for missing key elements, the most obvious being time constraints. All in all, I think these are useful ideas to keep in mind whenever writing a more rigorous review of whatever it is you've seen or read.
