Not too far into the future, Earth is on the brink of disaster. Food and water are contaminated and unsuitable to consume. War, overpopulation and pollution threaten to destroy the planet. As a last resort, expeditions go out to other planets; all fail. After several people suddenly vanish, and unorthodox seismic activity begins occuring all over the planet, investigations into the incidents reveal the existence of portals to other linked dimensions– the Gates.
After the expedition to the Gates, people leave Earth to settle in their new homes. All too soon, the inhabitants realize that the balance between the Gates is unstable and that they are about to collide. The men who led the expedition– who would later become known as the Legendary Five Heroes of the Gates– are the first to find and combine the elemental Keys.
The Water Gate
One of the dimensions linked to Earth. The Water Gate's villages are generally very formal, close-knit societies much like that of colonial America.
Quick facts: Small settlements aren't too far apart. Generally, wealth is shared among the members of a village, so there is no poverty. Crime rates are low, but there are some warring villages.
The Legendary Water Key
An item that has the power to reset the positions of the Gates.
The Minor Water Keys
Ten Keys, which resemble large gems, that must be combined to activate and use the Legendary Water Key. If the Keyholder so chooses, he or she can unlock the hidden powers of the minor Keys. The Keys also allow Takeshi to teleport the Keyholders to the Water Gate.
The Keyholders
The protectors of the minor Keys. The original Keyholders -- the Legendary Five spoken of in the Gate Legends -- passed their minor Keys on to their descendants. This is how Takeshi and Yuki pinpoint their potential teammates.
