Humans are such frail creatures...
A boy laid motionless on the dirty street. His legs were perfectly lined, while his hands were crossed over his chest. His eyes were closed, as a smile lingered on his serene face. The nameless boy could very well be asleep, dreaming a pleasant dream. Yet, one single detail completely contradicted this seemingly ordinary scene: blood. The red liquid flowed out of a monstrous wound at the ribs’ height into the pavement under, pooling around the cold body. The falling rain spread the blood further out, turning the street into a bloody stream.
A sharp shriek suddenly broke out from the surrounding crowd. The woman shoved her way through the curious people, towards the lifeless boy. When she finally reached him, she fell on her knees and stared in mute horror at her son’s pale face. With a shaking hand, she cupped his cheek gingerly, as if she feared it would break under more pressure. It felt cold. It felt dead. And finally, the truth came crashing down on her and she collapsed into tears. The mother’s head fell on the corpse’s chest, clutching the blood-soaked clothes and she sobbed uncontrollably. Her desolate cries echoed throughout the small, grey town, as she mourned her only son’s brutal death.
Far from the all the commotion, a single figure, a young girl, walked along an empty street, apparently leaving the rainy town. She wanted to leave, to leave before it was too late. She wanted to escape while she had the chance, to escape while she was still in one piece. But it was too late; when the mother’s grieving voice reached her sensitive ears, the girl stopped dead in her tracks. The cries, they felt like blades, stabbing her entire body. It hurt her. More than anything she felt before. It was a powerful pain, anguishing. It made her crumble to pieces and fall completely to the ground, wailing in the same agonizing tone as the poor mother. The pain, it was guilt.
It’s my fault you’re gone.
Through her sobs, the girl tried to drag her body out of the town, but the strong emotions she felt presently were numbing her body. So, she froze there, lying on the ground, mourning the boy’s death, because it was her fault.
I just saw a figure coming towards me. And then, I saw red. A lot of red.
"Xander!!” Miracle called desperately. Forgetting about the hostile situation she was just in, the girl ran towards the injured boy. Quickly, yet carefully, she turned him over so that he would be on his back.
“Y-you idiot!! Why did you do that?!”
“If I hadn’t, then you’d be the one on the ground here,” he joked, forcing a smile.
“That’s not funny, you moron!” Her voice began to crack as tears threatened to spill over. She blinked furiously, changing side to check the boy’s wounds. If she acted fast enough, she might just be able to save him. Miracle removed Xander’s red hand clutching his rib, and took a sudden sharp breath in when she saw the severity of the wound.
She was petrified momentarily, though tears fell down her appalled face without any resistance. A cold drop from the darkening sky, followed by many others, snapped Mira back to herself. She looked up and noticed that several people were witnessing the tragedy with frightened faces.
“What the hell are you standing there for?! Call a doctor, dammit!!” she hollered at the small crowd. They all jumped, startled, and two men ran off to seek medical aid.
Ignoring the growing crowd, Miracle turned back to face Xander. “It’s alright, Xander. Everything’s gonna be alright, ok? Just hold on for a while, please,” she tried to reassure him, but uncertainty was thick in her voice. She reluctantly glanced at the gaping wound, but quickly looked away.
Mira could very well heal the boy’s injury; she had the power to. However, to reconstruct a body part that large would put him in agonizing pain, and the strain put on the heart would end up killing him. She couldn’t even dare to move him to a hospital. There wasn’t anything she could do. Nothing to do, but wait.
In an attempt to keep the blood from flowing out, Miracle too off her grey cloak and wrapped it as gently as she could on Xander’s side. He groaned in pain, and opened his blue eyes. They looked awful; worn with death.
“Hey, Mira,” he said, his voice falling to a whisper.
“Please don’t talk. You have to save your energy,” she cautioned, but the boy ignored her.
“Can you promise me something?”
Miracle was taken aback by the sudden request. “What?”
“You and I both know I’m won’t make it.” At the sound of his words, the girl’s face was drained from its blood, eyes wide with horror.
“NO!!” she shrieked. “No, you can’t say that! You’re gonna be fine, Xander! You’ll recover real fast and, and then you’ll keep practicing alchemy and, and you’ll show everyone what you’re capable of!! That’s your goal, isn’t it?! Isn’t it, Xander?!”
A cold hand wound itself around Mira’s trembling one, and squeezed it reassuringly. She looked at the boy’s smiling face. It was that smile again. The one that broke through her defences when she first met him. It was that stupid smile of his again.
“Please listen to me, Miracle,” he pleaded softly. “It might sound silly, but I want you to promise me something. You know, I’ve never been able to transmute something decent, no matter how hard I tried or how much time I spent studying and practicing. So, the day you realize your dream, could you transmute something for me? It can be anything you want, but I want it to be made by your hands.”
Miracle stared at Xander, stupefied. It took her a few moments to understand his request. When she finally did, she broke down in tears again.
Xander squeezed her hand again. “Please Mira?”
“I... I... P-promise...” she sobbed, “I promise that... I’ll transmute something... for you... the day I reach my goal...”
A wide smile stretched out on Xander’s face. “Thanks Miracle... and good luck” and he closed his eyes. He released his grip from the girl’s hand, just as she placed them crossed over his chest. Then, she bent forward to plant a small, light kiss on Xander’s forehead.
“I promise,” she said in a firmer tone.
“... so glad I met you...” were the boy’s muttered words.
At last, the girl finally rose to her feet and left the scene.
I promise...
Miracle twitched slightly. She remembered the promise she had made to her friend just a few moments ago. Against the rain, she firstly got on her knees, and then on her feet. Slowly, she lifted her head to the weeping sky and stood still.
This was no time to be crying anymore. This was no time to be blaming oneself for the death of someone. This was no time to be broken. Now is the time to be strong and move forward.
"Rise to your feet," Mira murmured, "spread your wings," she lifted her arms, "and fly away," she smiled and resumed her way out of the town.
"Marion Carter..." she said as she walked past the town's borders, "You have taken someone very dear to me. Prepare to receive your judgement by the 21st Carrier..."
