I get this a lot at work in a slightly different manner.

"Where was this Sony TV made?"
    "Well, it's a Japanese company..."
"Yeah, but was it made in Japan?"
    "Let's see....... nope, China."
    "Ewww..."

I still stand with the idea that Japan is the land of silly stuff... or something like that... > > But yeah, everything has something that sucks about it. XD

Well, I'm sure the opposite holds true as well, Ace. The XBox 360 has had horrible sales over in Japan ever since the system debuted. Same for the Original XBox. However, the 360 is a big seller in the States.

But I agree with your point. I was skeptical about the live action Dragonball movie since day 1 and I already knew it was going to stink. Suprisingly....I was right.

There are hip hop rappers and red necks here and Japan has all those Harujuku girls who wear beads on their face.

Yeah every country has good and bad things about them.

Six-year-olds and nuclear weapons: a combination that just can't be beat.

    @Allamorph:

The Metroid games have a similar history, too. The first one didn't do well in Japan but was much more popular in the US, enough to justify sequels and keep the series alive.

Big O failed in Japan. It was released in the US and made a huge hit at the time, enough to warrant the second and final season. So things aren't always as they seem.

    But yes. You are correct.

Every culture has their good, bad, fugly and hidden gems. It takes someone with their head on straight to believe it.

I've had a few manga flop on me since I started downloading straight from the scanlators. Meister, Askelpios and Bokke-san were all cut dramatically short with endings from Your Mileage May Vary to sucky Executive Meddling. Now, because they weren't popular over in Japan, there is a slim chance I will ever see volumes in print Stateside.

So does this mean that swarming hordes of fans make success stories? Nope. I know of a great kids' horror series that is fairly cult in the following, for instance. Kids only believe what they're told and what they're told always comes from a very narrow viewpoint. Just relax; someone will tell them off sooner or later. Shame it just can't be sooner, eh? ^^'

I blame Scholastic book orders though.

Be true, be you and of couse, be otaku.

    I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN!!

Well, and my thing is too, is when people start dissing OEL artists because we're "not Japanese" and that makes me just as angry.

But I get into arguments all the time about Japanese movies, which are subpar at best. They occasionally can pull off a decent movie (The Death Note Movie and the Nana movie being examples of decently made movies. Nothing spectacular by any means, but they weren't horrible.)

So yah, I get into conversations like that all the time with people. I've noticed that trend with the "younger" generation (typically between the ages of 12-15) of fans believing that Japan is the God of all Gods when it comes to anime, movies, and video games.

    yah
