Mao no Tamashii

Well here's my first ever post, it's the first chapter of a story of mine I'm working on. I'm still working on it, so feel free to tell me what you think

Chapter 1
Demon King?! In a Girl’s Body!?

My alarm clock rang repeatedly at my ear from the right side of my bed, forcing me to groggily awaken; I shut off the clock and looked at the time, 7:30. I jolted off out of bed as I screamed, “Oh god, I’m going to be late for school!”
Before we continue this story, I’ll introduce myself, I’m Kain Nurosawa, 10th grader of Clear Academy; a school that starts from elementary to university level, only intelligent or talented people can enter this place; I happen to be in the intelligent category. I only have one friend, as sad as that is, but here’s a question for you. Do you believe in demons and such? Neither did I, until I met him.
A winged shadow covered mine, and a familiar voice called to me, “You’re going to be late, you know, Kain? You spent the whole night on that strange machine of yours again didn’t you?”
I stopped walking and looked up at a bad moment, seeing him in a girl’s form; which meant a skirt and seeing panties. I turned away with a blush and had an immediate nosebleed. “Night! How many times do I have to tell not to fly around in that girl form?! Now get back on land and put your wings and tail away!”
Remember what I said about demons? Well, this is Night, the Demon King himself; and also my only friend. And this girl form of his, long blond hair with a few red tints, sky blue eyes, white wing earrings, and big breasts; well that’s something I’ll explain a bit later. His guy form is in some terms different; he has jet black hair-around shoulder length, I guess, crimson red eyes, and a black choker made out of something I don’t want to know with a skull on the side. His real form is still a mystery to me.
As he gracefully landed on the ground, and retracted his large bat-like wings and long black tail with a fluffy and furry spiral tip, I continued walking as he said, “Kain, I don’t understand why humans worry about school. Why should we hurry?”
I pushed my glasses up to the ridge of my nose as I replied, “It’s to help us to increase our potential in this world, to be able to reach the top. Or for the students to have fun.” I glanced at my wristwatch, 7:40. “Crap! Only five minutes to get to class! I’m not going to make it!”
“Really?” Night asked as he grabbed my arm and running at full speed. “Then let’s go and have fun!”
This guy’s a very fast runner, meaning someone like me, the non-athletic type, to be dragged like a stuffed animal. “I get you’re excited, but, PLEASE SLOW DOWN!!!”

A little bit later, “We’re here! And four minutes early, right Kain?” He cheered in his female voice. At school-or in public for that matter, Night is 100% girl. To be more accurate, the male version of Night (Grei) and the female version of Night (Dusk) are two different people. To guys, the female version is the hottest angel you could ever meet with a cute upbeat personality, she’s smart, great at sports, and her voice is proof that she really is an angel, there’s actually an official fan-club for her, the girls respect her as their role-model.
To girls, the male version is the hot and cool silent type that rarely speaks, but his smooth deep voice and charming smile can make any woman faint, and if anyone were to see him blush, you’d fall in love with him in a second. He’s a genius at everything, including instruments, acting, and singing. They say that his beauty is rivaled with his female form; both of Night’s forms are actually shorter than me by an inch or so, but the students don’t seem to notice this though. The female fan-club is horrifying; they’d even attack the teachers if they were to make a wrong move at him.
Between his male and female form, both of them are the kind of person he is, I suppose. He has no idea about love, or anything considered human for that matter. Night’s an extremely curious guy, he does things you wouldn’t believe; Night’s smile is something that you can’t help but fall for, it looks like a sweet innocent child. He’s a nice guy that you’d never know he was the Demon King. Well, perhaps now’s a good time to explain how a Demon King met a nerdy guy like me.

I suppose it started when we were kids, that was the first time he came in this world, I think, and I saw him alone at the playground, he looked like he was crying, I felt sadden at that, a kid was crying, but no one even noticed, as if he wasn’t there to begin with. I walked up to him and asked, “Why are you crying?”
He looked at me confused, and hiccupping, “Y-you can see me?”
“Of course I can! Are you lonely? I’ll play with you.” I said reaching out my hand.
He was hesitant to reach out to me at first, but smiled and stood up, “Okay!”
“My name is Kain Nurosawa; you can call me Kain, what’s yours?”
He looked up at sky and back at me, “Night. Just like the sky.” As soon as he said that, the sky became dark and illuminated by the moon and stars, it was amazing, as if the entire sky turned dark just for him.
At the time, I thought it was magic, “Wow! So cool! You know how to do magic?”
He tilted his head to the side, “Magic? I have a friend that knows how to make fire into flowers. Is that what magic is?”
After that we played the entire time, but when it was time for me to leave, he walked with me home, when I reached the front door, I stopped and turned around, “I’ll see you tomorrow at the park, right Night?”
He shook his head, “No. I’m leaving this place. But maybe I’ll come back someday, when I do, I’ll wait at that park, here.” He said as he gave me a skull pin with blue eyes. “If you wear that, I’ll be able to know it’s you when we meet again.”
I smiled, “I promise, I’ll always have this with me, Night!”
True to my word, I kept that pin with me at all times, it always cheered me up when I was lonely during my childhood, but that’s another story for another time; a years passed since I last saw Night, and in between that time and now I’d seen strange things, so I wear these special glasses that helped me to not see that many of them; strange enough, I never told anyone, but I found them outside on my room’s porch, with black and white feathers scattered about. By the time I entered Clear Academy was by the 9th grade, I have no idea how I got accepted into the school, but I was unnoticed by most students, so I didn’t really complain; the school was wealthy enough to provide anyone and everyone what they would need, including dorms.
I’m getting off the topic, anyway, I made sure I always had that pin with me that I have it on my school uniform even to this day, one day at the school’s library, I stumbled upon a book about demons, it spoke of how evil and disgusting they were, how they caused destruction and feasted on human flesh and souls. That they exist even to this day, perhaps in human form as well. When I finished reading, I scoffed, Demons in human form? Heh, people believe in the dumbest things, demons aren’t real. I’ll believe when I see a real live demon for myself.
When I thought that, my pin suddenly glowed for a second, and I heard a voice: That’s cruel Kain. Aren’t I real?
As soon as that voice stopped speaking, the pin stopped illuminating as well, that voice was very familiar, but I couldn’t remember who, so I just shrugged it off. While I left the library and started heading home, I heard more voices, “This human is interesting, don’t you think?”
“It looks like a simple human to me; it probably can’t see or hear us.”
“So does our brat of a king, he’s said to be strongest, but he looks like a wimp.”
“Now that you mention that brat, this human is wearing half of that king’s family symbol.”
“I believe you’re right. The king must like this human to give it even half of the royal family crest to this filthy thing.”
“Let’s kill it. That thing probably stole it without that brat’s notice, if we take its head and pin to him, we might be rewarded beyond belief.”
The first voice just chuckled, “True, that brat’s so naïve that he’d give his body to us if we told him that was a way to return his gratitude.”
When they finished speaking, my body couldn’t move, as if it were frozen in place, I panicked when I felt a clawed hand I couldn’t see grazing against my neck, “G-ge-get away from me!!”
Right when I yelled that, my pin started glowing again, but this light was injuring whatever those voices were, making that hand miss my neck and knocking off my glasses instead. Immediately when it came off, I saw what those voices were that were attempting to kill me. Demons. Two demons were in front of me; looking burnt from that light that glowed from my pin. The one with the clawed hands looked frustrated, while the other one that seemed to have spikes all over its body was surprised at what just happened.
“What in great Hell’s name is that thing?! It was close to burning my arm off!!” The one with the clawed hand yelled, while the spiky one had noticed that I was staring right at them.
“I believe this human isn’t like filthy garbage as the others are. It seems that he is capable of seeing as well as hear us communicate.” It turned to face me, and stepped forward, “You can see us, right, human?”
It was obvious to say I was scared, I couldn’t actually answer that demon, but even if I did, it would kill me and give me to their king. Suffice to say that that book was completely right about demons was an understatement, if these normal demons were as frightening as the book described, then the demon king must be merciless.
All I did to reply was give them a quick nod, the clawed demon looked more agitated, “I don’t care if that thing can see us or not, forget that bratty king, I’m eating it.”
“You always were one to do things on impulse and ignore the benefits. Not to say that I will stop you, in fact, I’ve always wondered what a human that was capable of seeing us tasted like.”
Once again I was frozen in place, probably the doing of the spiky demon, this time when that clawed demon attempted to kill me, the only thing that caused it to stop was an echoing voice, the exact same one I had heard at the library, “You do not seem to understood a warning when one is placed in front you, do you?”
“Who are you? You dare get in a demon’s way? We can easily locate and slaughter you.” The spiky monster spoke arrogantly and with utter confidence in their strength.
“Is that so? Then I shall make myself known to you.” As if appearing out of nowhere, just as the voice said, it materialized in front of us; with large daunting black wings that would fit a devil’s and a long tail with a downward spiral on the end that seemed like it was capable drilling through anything. He was covered a red cloak along with black clothes that spoke “royalty”, normally I hate wealthy people, but despite the clothes; he had a sweet, warm, and almost childlike aura, close to a girl’s, I couldn’t find any reason to dislike him, yet.
I was free from my frozen state, but I didn’t run, something told me to stay, to watch until the very end. The two demons seemed crossed between surprised and baffled, the clawed one, that seemed the ill-tempered out the two; tried to get on the Demon King’s good side, “Your Majesty, why are you here in the human world?”
“We were simply disposing of this trash that was foolish enough to wear even half of your family’s great symbol. Of course, after we had accomplished that, we would bring you its head as a sign of respect.” The spiky one continued, but kept the same smirking and confident voice.
“I see, you attempted to kill this human who happened to wear my family’s symbol, and bring me the head of this human that has the ability to see and hear us as a token of respect, correct?” At that question, the two nodded vigorously before he spoke again, “Then care to tell me this, you two said that you were going to slaughter me with such a confident attitude toward your strength, well why are you so hesitant now?”
“We didn’t know who you were, Your Majesty! We can assure you if we had known; we would show our proper respects to you and your family.”
“Then tell me, who is this “naïve and bratty king” you were speaking of? In my knowledge, I am the current demon king. As naïve as I may be, I won’t show mercy to those who insult me, give me one reason to not kill you now?”
The two demons stuttered but came over it as prepared to attack me again, “What if we were to give this human’s head? That should be adequate for your mercy.” The spiky one spoke in voice that would best fit a conman.
The clawed one, on the other hand, just wanted to spill blood, especially from what is supposed to be a powerful demon king, “Yeah, and as our prize, we get to kill you, you say you’re so powerful but no one’s ever seen you fight. I wonder how king’s flesh taste like.”
The king’s neutral and albeit kind look on his face turned into a stern frown, “Bad decision.” Was all he said before another light surrounded me and decapitated the other demons’ arms, while it burned to those demons, this light was warm, it felt safe, even though it came from that king, I trusted that light. “That human with a pin of my family crest belongs to me. You think killing my human and bringing his head before me would appease my anger? No, the two of you only enhanced it, not only did you attempt to kill him three times, you insulted my family’s strength and right to be your ruler. Perhaps I should show you my power.”
He took a step forward, and they took three steps back, quivering in fear of their king, “Have you ever wondered why no one has seen or spoke of my power?” He continued speaking like he already knew the answer, “It’s because, those that have seen it… Are now dead. And you two may join the souls that I have killed.”
Before they could even try to flee that light surrounded them, it was strange, for a split second, the light looked close to flames, suffice to say; those demons burned to ash within seconds. Before those ashes scattered, I noticed the king whispering something, what he said was along the lines of, “May your souls rest without sin.”
He noticed I was still there, turned to my direction, and gave me cheerful smile. He flew up a few feet, and went down directly towards me, I really thought he was going to make me his toy like he’d told those demons. As he went down, he hugged me, obviously I lost balance so I fell to the ground with him on top, embracing me. As I sat up a bit with him still wrapped around my stomach, I was downright confused, what just happened to that frightening demon king that just killed his own kind?
My thoughts were interrupted when he giggled, it sounded sweet; cute to be honest, I asked him, “What’s so funny?”
“You haven’t changed at all Kain, I really missed you.”
“Wait, how do you-” I stopped when I took a close look at him, jet black hair, red eyes, and around his neck; a choker with the same skull pin I had on the side. No way, could this really be Night? “Night? Is that you?”
The demon king nodded, “Yep!” Night cheered, “You kept your promise, you kept that pin with you all this time.”
“Well yeah, you’re my friend, why wouldn’t I keep your promise? Never mind that, you’re the demon king?!”
“Yes!”
“Okay, what was all that “I’m your human” stuff earlier?” I said in a mildly upset tone.
He looked up at me like a kicked puppy, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it. But if I didn’t say that, they would have killed you. You’re my friend, so I had to say and do whatever I had to.”
The puppy look made me feel like the bad guy, “Fine, just stop with the sad look already. Now where are my glasses?”
As soon as I said that, Night immediately got off me to pick up the glasses that were lying on the ground, and handed to me, smiling. Taking them away from him, they looked intact from the whole situation. Night noticed my staring at the glasses, “You’re attached to those glasses; that must mean they’re still working.”
“What do you mean?”
“I made those glasses, so they can’t ever break for a very long time. I also put in something special too.”
“And that would be?”
“It’s a secret. You can see and hear demons, I can’t do anything about you hearing them, but they can make sure you don’t see the weaker demons here.”
So Night was the one who gave these glasses to me, that explains the black feathers, but what about the white ones? An idea crossed my mind, “Hey, can you show me you wings and tail?”
He nodded and brought out his wings and tail, and turned around so I could get a closer look. When I touched his wing, I was expecting it to be rough and feel like a layer of skin like a bat’s, but they were soft and smooth, if not a bit warm. When I felt something tap on my leg, I looked down to notice Night’s tail swaying back and forth, I unconsciously grabbed it without thinking, making Night flinch a bit. “Sorry.” I lessened my grip when his tail seemed to have a mind of its own and tried to dislocate my wrist, his tail was soft; I could actually feel fur. My attention was brought to the tip of his tail, it shined with black and a faint blue tints, I was somewhat hesitant on touching it; but his tail seemed to pick up on that and rose to my face and rubbing against my face gently. It was pretty soft, the end was mostly fur, it felt in best words I could describe it-fluffy.
“Hey Night, how come the end of your tail’s a downward spiral? I mean it looks like two spirals overlapping the other.”
“Big Brother says that it’s normal because I’m not just a normal demon, so it looks like that. I can even make it do stuff like this.” He told me as his tail left my hand, the end looked like it extended slightly and moved similar to drill, then it dove into the ground and lifted a large slab of concrete, threw it in the air and give the impression that it slashed at it, although I couldn’t tell since his tail was moving so quickly. By the time it stopped moving, the slab turned into gravel.
I was surprised by that tail’s strength, I was more surprised by the fact that he had a brother, but I figured finding out that your childhood friend is a demon king would lead to this kind of stuff.
He brought back my attention when he turned around and took a few steps back, “When we were kids, I didn’t introduce myself the right way, so here goes.” He took my hand into his, gave it a light kiss, and looked at me with; I’ll admit, a charming smile, “Hello, Kain Nurosawa. My full name is GreiNight HellsWing Vermillion, I am the 95th Demon King. You may call Grei or Night if you wish. I am honored to make your acquaintance, again.”
My first reaction was to blush, I mean I hadn’t seen the guy since we were six, he seemed like the type to be introverted to most people, how in the world did he learn that? “Wh-what was that about?”
Night gave me a confused glance, “Did I do it wrong again? I thought that’s how humans greet each other.”
“Well yeah, if you’re ki- …Never mind. Can you tell me more about yourself, it’s been ten years since I saw you.”
All he did was smile and say, “Not now, it’s time for you to wake up. I’ll see you later.”
“Wait!” I yelled to call out to him, then I woke up in my room. I didn’t even remember walking home or going to sleep. Maybe all that stuff about Night and demons were just a dream, I got ready for school and as class was starting, our homeroom teacher, Ms. Cult, spoke to us, “Okay everyone, before we begin our normal lesson for the day, we have two new transfer students, although it seems one couldn’t make it today. The one that could make it seems to have a wide degree of talents, well, come in here and introduce yourself.”
As she instructed, who else was to come in was none other than Night, wearing our school uniform and that same black choker and skull pin from my dream. He stood in front of the class and was silent for a bit, “My name is GreiNight Vermillion, call me Grei, it’s nice to meet you all.” He looked over the class, he didn’t seem interested; being that they were just strange humans, when he noticed me, his eyes lit up and he smiled to everyone, “I’m new here, so please be kind to me.”
And that’s how all this began, ever since then, Night rarely ever leaves my side, he’s really like a puppy, although I doubt he’s ever seen one before. “Hey Night.”
Night, still in his female form turned around, “What is it, Kain?”
“You being the demon king and being able to turn into a girl is just the beginning of your surprises, isn’t it?”
“Yup! There’s going to be tons and tons of surprises showing up soon! I can’t wait!”
My blood ran cold at that, I’m not sure what these “surprises” are, but good or bad, I have a feeling I might end up dead from it.

End
