Connections, Part Three

“Alright, here’s what I have in mind: right now, it would be suicide to send you directly into the castle itself to revive her, so instead I’m going to send you into her mind.”

I could not believe that he had just recommended that. Taking a step back, I asked in awe, “Wait—you mean as in an…an astragal projection?”

Astral projection,” Merlin corrected. “And yes, sort of.”

“I thought such magic forbidden!”

“It’s not forbidden…it’s just not advised.” answered Merlin humorously.

“I see…” I knew that I could trust Merlin and what he told me, but my mind reeled at the thought of his request. Along with the code of chivalry that I had promised to follow from my lord Arthur, I had developed a few rules of my own to further discipline myself in hopes to never repeating the sins of my past. One of these additions specifically stated that my use of magic would be restricted to what could be used on the front lines. Perhaps it was these facts that lead me to believe that other varieties were restricted as well and was the reason why I felt so uneasy about the ordeal.

Putting his hand on my shoulder, Merlin asked with concern clear in his voice, “You’re thinking about the day you first became a Nobody, aren’t you?” Truthfully, I was; and why not? My pride mixed in with the recklessness I used to show off like a crown and my illiteracy in magic was the reason why I became a Nobody in the first place. Without waiting for an answer out of me, Merlin continued, “I know what I’m asking is a direct challenge to your honor code, but I really need your help Etxel. You see, you’re the only one that I can trust with this kind of a mission, especially on such short notice. So please, will you do this for us?”

If it had been anyone else, I would have spent the next few moments weighing the distrust I held over a quest of this variety due to my past encounters with them. However, I promised Lady Xakiah long ago to protect her regardless of any shortcomings between us, and nothing was going to prevent me from fulfilling that promise now. Besides, if this mission proved to be successful—which I had every intention of making it—this could serve as my way of repenting for the transgression I committed against Lady Xakiah a few years ago. Submitting to his demand, I looked up and answered with conviction, “I swear on my blade that I will see your request through.”

Grinning, Merlin said, “I knew I could count on you. Archimedes!” he shouted while turning around. “Go find that book with the spell we need.”

“May I be of assistance?” asked Genie politely while tapping him lightly on the shoulder.

“Certainly!” answered Merlin cheerfully. “Besides, with your help this operation can be made much smoother.”

“Alright!” shouted Genie jubilantly. Popping to where Archimedes was, he began pouring through the book that the grumpy old bird had finally located from the top shelf.

Moving the furniture and countless tomes elsewhere, Merlin guided me to the center of the room and had me situate myself on the floor. When I had done that, Merlin then took Irminsul away from me and laid it against the wall. It did not take long for him to notice my confusion over such and he promptly explained to me that this operation required what he called a “persnickety” spell circle and that left no room for error. He said that he did not want to risk leaving my weapon where it was due to the probability of him tripping over it and accidentally creating a bomb where I sat. Quickly understanding the urgency of the situation, I nodded my head and let him continue his work.

As I sat there, I observed Merlin take piece of chalk in his hand to carefully form two circles on the floor; a small one that barely kept me within its borders and a larger one that was about three feet wider. In the inside of the circles he wrote a sentence in Latin; Duos mens, duos phasmatis, unus tractus. As a final touch, Merlin drew various symbols whose function was unknown to me. With his task done he rose up to his feet and went to review what else was required for the spell he had in mind.

When preparations were complete Merlin looked back over to me and asked, “Now Etxel, are you ready?”

Before I gave him an answer I took in a deep breath to try and steady my nerves. Sighing heavily, I answered, “As ready as I will ever be, Merlin.”

“Good. Now let’s—oh, bother!” he suddenly said hurriedly. “I almost forgot to give you a few words of warning before you go. How silly of me!” With as serious as events were becoming, I felt as though I suffered a heart attack—or rather as close as a Nobody can get to one.

“Hmph! Figures.” huffed Archimedes.

“And what do you mean by that?” asked Merlin harshly.

Giving him a certain look that lasted for a split second, Archimedes said spitefully, “You claim to be the ‘greatest wizard in the world,’ and yet you commit the blunders of an air-head! Honestly, Merlin; isn’t it bad enough that you’re sending this lad into dangerous territory? And now you want to encourage him by saying that there are details that you ‘just so happened’ to lose track of? Seriously Merlin—”

“I know that was foolish of me, but let me remind you that time is of the essence right now.” Moving closer to me, Merlin looked at me directly in the eyes and briefed me on what to expect. “Now Etxel, as you know the mind is one of the most complex systems in the body; other than controlling our regular and necessary functions, such as breathing and maintaining a pulse, it acts as medium to relay our thoughts, emotions, and ideals. Under normal circumstances, this would mean that your trip would take a considerable amount of time to complete due to the endless corridors you would have to pass before you reached what I call the core; the section of a person’s mind that relays the absolute truth about the individual.

“However, Xakiah’s mind isn’t stable right now. The blessing in this is that finding her will be much easier than before, courtesy of most of the traps and false passages that she most likely set up being disabled. On the other hand, this also means that anything you do to try and go past whatever obstacles might be leftover could result in destroying what’s left of her mind. And if that happens…well, I’m sure I don’t need to tell you what the consequences would be, now do I?” Nodding, I beckoned him to continue. “To be perfectly honest with you, the only thing I expect Xakiah of being capable of in her current state is basic communication and recollection. But that should prove more than enough for you to get through to her. After all, you are her sweetheart, are you not?” he ended with a grin.

Blushing at the tone he took while saying that, I brushed the question aside and requested the return of my weapon. I expected someone to put up a fuss over it since this would be a direct contradiction to Merlin’s warning, but thankfully not much was said after I reassured them that my reason for bearing Irminsul along for the journey was more for principle rather than the actual need to use it. “Regardless of title, I am a warrior by nature.” I reminded them. “And I would be damned if I refute that nature now.”

“Very well.” Merlin handed Irminsul back to me and took a few steps back to begin his craft. “Now Genie, if you would be so kind.”

“Of course.” Ecstatic, Genie announced, “Now, let’s make some magic!”

~*~

Not long after Genie and I began our chant did we find Etxel sitting ramrod straight in a trance. Sighing with relief at the successful transition of his mind flowing into Xakiah’s, I began to brace myself for the real challenge.

“Hey Merlin, are you sure you want to use that low of a frequency? It’s barely enough to keep the link up.” asked Genie.

“Absolutely.”

“But why?”

Answering for me, Archimedes said knowledgeably, “Because he doesn’t want the man behind Xakiah’s fall to notice, that’s why.”

“Oh,” Genie started, “I thought it was because you were trying to keep a low profile in case Mordred shows up.”

“Well, there is that,” I agreed, “but this other individual poses more immediate of a threat right now.”

“Is there anything you want me to do? You know I’m the master of distractions.” he finished with a wink.

Grinning again, I responded, “And I don’t doubt that for a moment. However, somebody else is keeping him busy right now. With any luck, the lad fighting him will buy us enough time for Etxel to save Xakiah unnoticed.”

~*~

During the chanting I began to feel weightless; no doubt a result of my consciousness leaving my body. When Merlin and Genie were done with the spell my body began to rapidly charge in the direction of Castle Oblivion. I tried to make out whatever scene I could, but the only one that I could clearly focus on was the image of Lady Xakiah lying badly injured on the floor of the dungeon. If not for the urgency I felt at that moment I would have wept at this appalling sight. Truthfully, I had no idea what to expect to see upon going inside. I knew Merlin wanted me to reach the core of her spirit, and I had done well to commit what Merlin had told me only moments before to memory, but I was not certain as to how to venture there. Shaking off my doubts, I grasped Irminsul tighter in my hands, kneeled over Lady Xakiah’s now motionless body, and made my decent into her mind.

During the decent I saw images of Lady Xakiah’s past, many of which were obscured with shadows, blood, and death. Closing my eyes, I thought sadly to myself how logical that was considering that most of her life, even before she became a Nobody, was endless parade of the darker aspects of this universe and renewed my vow to deliver her from that world someday. When I opened my eyes again I found scenes of a battle taking place. Observing it closely, I became disturbed when I found it contained moments from at least twenty different confrontations. What bothered me even more was that each one of them was out of order.

Finally touching solid surface, I gazed around to find myself in a grass field littered with rubble. Some of the rubble I found looked as though they came from a fortress while others were inscribed with incomplete spells. When I looked back up I saw a skyline that mimicked a tattered tapestry that was confused with either portraying twilight or nighttime. Seeing no signs of life, I pressed forward hoping that I would come across Lady Xakiah soon. Within minutes after hiking up a hill I saw smoke rising into the misshapen sky. Running to get a better look, I discovered that the smoke was coming from a castle that had recently been ransacked. It looked extremely familiar and I tried my best to identify it, but the banners that were hung to declare its name for all to see were blackened with soot. Disappointed, I turned my head slightly to the left when the top of another structure caught my eye. This time I was more familiar with the object, and when I focused my whole attention to it I was met face-to-face with Stonehenge, complete with an unknown object within her center. I took this as a good omen since the Stonehenge of my memory lacked anything in its center, and without another thought I raced to the location.

Sure enough, when I arrived I was pleased to find that my memory had served me well; in the center of Stonehenge stood a solid stone platform about three feet high, and in the center of that lay Lady Xakiah with her eyes partially open. What took me by surprise, however, was seeing Lady Xakiah with her hair down and sprawled out under her and donning a beautiful white and emerald dress that revealed her developed figure. Blushing furiously at this rare, breath-taking sight, I gave myself the sign of the cross and fervently reminded myself of my true purpose.

Slowly making my way to where she lay, I retired Irminsul, sat down, took her right hand in mine and asked softly, “Lady Xakiah, are you alright?” No response came. Trying again, I said a bit more firmly, “Lady Xakiah, it is me. Etxel. I have come to help you.” Still void of a response from her, my earlier optimism faded. Desperate, I leaned in closer and said, “Please, mo chroí, if you can hear me please say something—anything—to let me know that you are still with me,” and began to kiss her. Only when I stopped and looked into her eyes had I finally found the reason behind this occurrence: Lady Xakiah’s eyes were pale with death. Cursing myself for realizing this too late, I became so overcome with sorrow, disbelief, and pure rage at this that I ended up screaming.

Feeling as though my spirit was being ripped apart, I lost control of my reserve and demanded to the twisted sky above, believing that some trace of her might be lost within it, “Why?! After all you have been through, after all you have survived, why does this have to be the one thing that stops you?! You are so much stronger than this, I know it! So please…give me some sort of sign…anything!”

Ignoring my pleas, the world around me stayed as stagnant as it was when I arrived. Part of me wanted to give up and submit to the circumstances. Part of me wished desperately that I had somehow intervened in that battle she was in earlier. Then again, the largest part of me wished desperately that I could trade places with her so that she did not have to suffer this grim fate.

“Why are you crying?” I almost did not catch this voice with as soft-spoken as it was. Breaking free from my lamenting, I glanced up to see that Lady Xakiah was peering in my direction, although her eyes had not changed their texture.

Wiping away my tears, I meekly answered, “Oh, sorry…I guess I got carried away.”

“…Why?”

“Well…I thought for a moment that I was too late to save you.”

“…I see…” Slowly moving her head back to its original position, she continued slowly, “Maybe that’s why…” Waiting for her to finish her statement, I urged her to continue her thought when she suddenly changed the topic by asking, “Who are you?”

Taken aback by how serious she was while asking that, I inquired in return, “I am Etxel. Why do you ask?”

“Because…I think I’ve seen you somewhere before. But…that cannot be.”

“And why not?”

“Because,” she started matter-of-factly, “you are not Irish, English, nor Japanese.”

It was then that I remembered that Merlin’s words. Deducing that she was suffering amnesia, I decided it best to be gentle and play along with these questions that I had not heard her ask since we first got reunited almost a lifetime ago, even though it pained me to do so. “I would imagine not, Lady Xakiah. I am Saxon.”

I expected her to be surprised that she was talking to a heathen, but instead she caught me off guard by asking, “Who is ‘Lady Xakiah?’”

“You do not know?”

She continued to blankly gaze into my face, apparently waiting for me to describe her. Just as I was about to though, she cut me off by suddenly sitting upright. Clutching my cloak tightly, she closely examined the three-ring symbol that I had etched into it to distinguish it amongst the others in the Organization. Squinting her eyes she murmured, “I know this…unity…strength…valor …” Looking back into my face she stated indifferently, “I know this.” Changing her tone, her eyes casted a glow about them as she stammered, “I know this! I—I can’t quite recall what it’s for, but I know this mark!”

I was happy for her, but a distressing theory burned in my mind that prevented me from showing it. When she had finished her remark, I cut the mood by asking, “If I am not mistaken, you remember everything regarding the mark, me, and yourself. The problem is that all of that information has been thrown into such chaos that you cannot remember it in order, correct?” Her eyes instantly went back to the way they were as she tilted her head down, confirming my analogy. Sighing, I reassured her that I would try my best to help her, and that everything was going to be alright. Not that I truly believed what I was saying anymore. At this point, I was about ready to succumb to the feeling that I was truly powerless to change her current status. Eventually I was too ashamed at myself to look at Lady Xakiah anymore, and I thought bitterly on how foolish I was to think that I could just waltz in and fix the damage done to a mind greater and more complex than my own.

But once again, just as I was about to submit to undertaking a hollow existence, Lady Xakiah once again saved me by breaking me from my dark thoughts. This time, however, her voice was heavy with despair. “Anamchara,” she started as I looked back at her, finally noticing her tears and her tightened grip over my chest, “help me.”

Nothing else mattered anymore. My thoughts cleansed of its impurities, I embraced her gingerly and said, “Mo chroí, all I ask is that you wait for a few moments while I think of a way rescue you.” Not waiting for a response, I gave her my cloak as a way of assuring that I would not leave her there alone.

Leaving the platform for a while, I began to pace around Stonehenge while my mind raced through a means to succeed. Alright Etxel, what do you have to work with? Well, Lady Xakiah’s memories are there, just not in order. I could try to—no wait, I do not know all of the things Lady Xakiah has seen and experienced in her lifetime so trying to tell her a ‘story’ from ‘beginning’ to ‘end’ is out of the question. Besides, if it were as simple as that she would not have struggled before just trying to have a conversation with me. Okay, new angle:

Lady Xakiah’s memories need to be rearranged, and being one of the closest people to her I am one of the only ones who can do this. Hold on…this sounds familiar…of course! Naminé had an episode with Sora quite similar to this. Only, Sora’s memories were just tainted instead of thrown to all corners of the wind, and the connection Naminé had with Sora was a tad indirect…but that can still help! All I need to do is recall how Naminé fixed Sora’s memories and use that same principle on Lady Xakiah.

…Oh bloody hell! I have no idea how Naminé even managed to do that in the first place! Just perfect…so it is all left to theory now…bah! This sort of deep thinking has never been my forte—well, hang on; Naminé knew Sora through Kairi’s memories, so maybe I should go along that route.

Alright, Kairi and Sora were definitely not a couple at that point in their lives so any memories Naminé—and Roxas for that matter—possessed would have to be of their friendship. Which makes a lot of sense when you think about it; even Sora himself admitted a long time ago that the most important thing to him was friendship. So, if Naminé used that to her advantage, all I need to do is figure out the most important thing in Lady Xakiah’s life. Yes!

…Oh bloody hell again! I have no clue what the most important thing in her life is! Ugh…quests were so much easier when all you had to do was beat something up to save a bloody damsel in distress…

Through sheer determination, I began to go through a list of possibilities for what would be the most important thing in her life. I mused at the thought of it being friendship like Sora, and even laughed a little when I postulated it being love, but in both of those situations I concluded them to be utterly impossible. It hurt to admit it, but logically speaking if those were truly the most important things in her life than she would be much more open than she is now.

After a while longer of going through the elements of life and finding a reason to denounce them all, I sat down in half defeat, half aggravation. Hanging my head down, I began to curse myself for knowing so little of the woman I loved and for not asking those personal questions earlier. Within moments of doing so a single word popped into my skull that magically solved my problem: Camelot. It certainly was not an element of life, but it made sense; if not for the promise of Camelot, she never would have been recruited at an early age to be an assassin. If not for events transpiring there, she never would have become a Nobody. And, if not for loyally following Arthur and acting as his personal bodyguard, we never would have been reunited after we reached adulthood. In short, without Camelot, Lady Xakiah would not be the person she is today. Sure, I was taking a huge gamble at this considering that I certainly am no expert in sewing minds back together. At that point though, I believed that a miracle was about to take place and decided to take my chances.

Recalling how she had reacted to the insignia on my cloak, I summoned Irminsul back into my hands so that Lady Xakiah could see the symbol engraved on the surface of its blade. Turning back to the platform I confidently reclaimed my place next to her side, handed her Irminsul, and told her to tell me the meaning behind it.

“Okay, but…what part do you want me to start with?”

“Whatever you feel like starting with first.” I answered, smiling gently at her.

Concentrating hard, the tension in her eyes slowly dissipated as a childish grin blossomed on her face. “This…this is a symbol of knighthood, which was only given to the Knights of…the Knights of…the Round Table! The table itself represented unity amongst the many knights that sat within it, and was designed to where no one knight seemed more important than the other. It could hold many knights—as many as 150 back in its heyday—but there was always one seat that was left empty. That seat was reserved for the best knight in the world, and whosoever found the Holy Grail.

“Oh, that’s right!” Floating her hand on over to the cross, she continued in her merry tone, “This cross, other than representing God and the Messiah of course, represented the oath a knight took to live a pure and stainless life and to love others and noble deeds.” Giggling, she quickly added, “Not that many actually lived up to the ‘pure and stainless’ part, especially if your name was ‘Kay the Brute,’ ‘Gawain the Womanizer,’ or ‘Lancelot the Hypocrite.’” (I will be honest, that last remark pleased me to no end.)

“And finally, the red dragon…a prophet once told the former King Uther Pendragon that a white dragon would come to ravage England, and that one day a red dragon would come to combat against it. The prophet was Merlin, my Múinteoir, the white dragon turned out to be the Saxons, and that red dragon turned out to be none other than Uther’s son, Arthur Pendragon. I remember…he told me one day that he decided to use the symbol of a red dragon instead of any other symbol that would’ve separated us from the Saxons because he wanted it to serve as a reminder to his knights about the oath of loyalty to him and to Christendom that they made. He also wanted it to serve as a reminder that, although the Saxons proved to be some of our most brutal enemies, they were no different than we are…” she ended trailing off. Looking deep into my eyes for a long time, she repeated, “No different…” Smiling to herself, she placed Irminsul to the side, buried her face into my chest and wrapped her arms around me lovingly. Returning the gesture, I purposely placed my right hand on the back of her neck and quietly took in her scent that reminded me of a brook.

Barely prying us apart, she cradled my face into her slim fingers, looked back into my eyes, and quietly said, “Thank you, anamchara. I knew I could count on you.” My chest swelled with pride at her words—words which were not only a rarity, but an honor coming from her—and the rest of my body began to relax. Confident and relieved, I finally allowed the sin that I had unwittingly made against her to be forgiven.

Changing the mood suddenly, she reverted back to her normal sarcastic-but-playful tone, “Of course, if you were expecting a kiss from me as a reward, you better think again.”

Playing along, I countered, “A kiss? You think after all of this trouble I would be satisfied with a simple kiss?”

Relinquishing herself from my embrace, Lady Xakiah rose to her feet, raised her eyebrow and asked, “Oh? And…what would you be satisfied with, pray tell?”

Grinning, I got off the ground and started making my way to Lady Xakiah when I stopped dead in my tracks. In my panic, I had ignored the physical beauty of this woman standing before me, and when confronted with it again I became dumbfounded. Admiring her angelic form, I observed how her white and emerald gown flowed gracefully from her limbs and how her jet-black hair, which went well past her waist, rippled and shined in the twilight setting behind her. Out of all of these features though, the one I spent the most time staring at were her eyes. I am not certain as to what the cause of it was, but in that moment her eyes seemed to shine with a force that mimicked the heavens.

“Etxel? …Earth to Etxel…Come in Etxel.”

“My God, you are beautiful…”

“Well,” she chuckled, “if you have a problem with that I could always pay Madam Mim a visit. I’m sure she’d be happy to fix—or rather, destroy—the problem for us.” For a moment I actually thought she was serious and started yelling for her to refrain from that threat. By mid-sentence I caught myself from finishing that thought, but not in time to prevent her laughing at me for how naïve I was. “Seriously though, Etxel; what brought that on?”

Blushing, I instinctively started scratching the back of my head and mumbled, “Well, I…I am not used to seeing you outside of your casual attire. And because of that it…caught me off guard.” To prevent her from responding to that remark, I quickly asked, “Is that how you see yourself on a regular basis?” I did not expect an answer from her. All I was hoping to do was change the course of the conversation so that I could stop acting like a boy who just found out that girls are attractive.

Surprisingly, Lady Xakiah actually gave me a straightforward response. “Only when I am in my sanctuary do I ever see myself this way. Otherwise, I’m in my battle-gear.”

“Really? Do you ever picture me in your sanctuary?” I asked half playing, half genuinely curious.

Privately smiling to herself, she said, “That’s a little too personal, don’t you think?” In business tone, she continued, “In any event, this isn’t the time for idle chatter. With the leader of the Organization out on the rampage, I need to report back to Castle Oblivion to see what sort of damage-control I can assist with.”

“You are not interested in seeking revenge on the perpetrator and killing him yourself?”

She shook her head, “No. Even before I stepped into the Organization I knew it was not my destiny to rid the universe of that cur. However,” she smirked, “that doesn’t mean I’m not interested in making the last few moments of his pathetic existence a living hell.”

Understanding her desire, I picked up Irminsul off the ground and stood at attention. “Very well. Lady Xakiah, is there anything you want me to do?”

“Do you know what the current situation at Castle Oblivion is?” I told her that I did not know the specifics, and instead relayed to her what Merlin had told me. “Then yes, there is something I want you to do: I want you to return to Xerebus’ side.”

“What?! I thought you did not care for him!” I said shocked.

“Of course I don’t. However, with the current leader of Oblivion on the rampage, Xerebus will have no choice but to make his move. I wish I could point you in the direction of better company right now, but if my hunch is correct that better company will find you if you’re with Xerebus.”

“What makes you say that?”

“Before the leader attacked me and another Nobody by the name of Setxune, I noticed that some of the other big-wigs of the Organization were MIA. I suspect by now that they’ve created a plan of their own to handle the situation. What that plan may be or how they plan to execute it…well, one can only guess.

“Now Etxel…are you ready for a bloodbath?” she asked with a dark grin on her face.

The warrior in me leaped for joy at that question. It informed me that I could valiantly join my comrades on the battlefield without any further restraint sometime in the near future. Concealing my enthusiasm towards obtaining glory in the way that I was born to, I maintained my courtly manners and humbly told her that I would follow her advice.

“Then what are we waiting for? An official declaration of war?”

~*~

“So how’d it go, Etxel?” asked Genie anxiously.

Jumping to my feet, I said nothing as I grasped Irminsul tightly in both of my hands and unlocked one of its three power reserves; the start of the volcanic eruption that was going to be my participation in this crisis. Turning around to confront Merlin, Genie, and Archimedes, I said, “A perfect reunion between two warriors, if I do say so myself.”

“‘Warriors,’ eh? Hmph! More like two demons, if you ask me!” sneered Archimedes.

“Normally, I would tell you not to entice him, but I believe that’s exactly what we want right now.” smiled Merlin humorously.

“Merlin, I trust that you will keep Lady Xakiah and I posted on any developments into our personal matters?”

“Of course. Now go.”

“Hold on. Genie, what will you do from here?” I asked, recalling how gloomy he felt over Agrabah.

“Well,” he started, “I’ll be going home after this to see what I can do to help matters there. But don’t you worry about little ol’ me,” he added with a mischievous grin, “You’ve already got your own problems to be dealing with.”

Nodding, I said my fare-thee-wells and went to work picturing a room that I knew Xerebus was known to frequent. That done, I carved a portal out using Irminsul to take me directly there without quarrel and left Merlin’s house without another word.

Ninja no Kuroi Genso – “Black Element Ninjas”; the name of the organization that trained Xakiah, Sadao, Ren, and Tatsuya way back when
Taiyô Sensô – Japanese for “Ocean War”; the name of the three-pronged spear Ren uses
fāgwyrm – Saxon for “basilisk”
Duos mens, duos phasmatis, unus tractus – Latin for “Two minds, two spirits, one space”
mo chroí – Irish Gaelic for “my heart”
