Interesting Specimen: Elgyem

I was having a little trouble deciding which Pokemon I should do next in this series. In fact I even thought about not doing a post for this week. But in the end I decided to cover a couple of extraterrestrial Pokemon, Elgyem, and its evolved form, Beheeyem.

It’s hard finding images for some of these posts I’ve noticed. Anyway, Elgyem and Beheeyem are more examples of what’s known as extraterrestrial Pokemon, as in Pokemon from space. Elgyem and Beheeyem have been associated with a fifty-year old UFO crash site in the Pokemon World that happened near the Dessert Resort. Since then these Pokemon have moved to another location, but more on that in a bit. Elgyem can use their psychic abilities to cause headaches in others, which as a migraine sufferer is something I want to avoid. The psychic abilities of Beheeyem seem to be a little stronger, but I’ll get to that when I cover the evolution of these Pokemon.

In the Games: In Black and White, and their sequels, Elgyem can be found in the Celestial Tower since moving from their supposed crash site near the Desert Resort. The Celestail Tower is the Unova counterpart to the old Pokemon Tower in Kanto (before it got turned into a radio station). Elgyem and Beheeyem come with two very good abilities. The first is Telepathy, which prevents it from taking damage from the moves of its teammates in double and triple battles, useful if you’re using moves like Earthquake. The second ability is Synchronize, which is a personal favorite of mine. If Elgyem or Beheeyem is inflicted with a status problem other than SLP or FRZ, that status problem is inflicted on the opponent as well. Since Emerald, if a Pokemon with Synchronize is at the head of the party, any wild Pokemon you encounter will have the same nature as the Pokemon with Synchronize.

Evolution: At Level 42, Elgyem evolve into Beheeyem. Upon evolution, Beheeyem’s psychic powers seem to become stronger. Beheeyem is able to alter the memories of others, able to either erase or alter memories if needed. It’s kind of a frightening power if you think about it. Of course it seems that Elgyem in the anime have this power too. Either way it’s clear that these Pokemon have something to hide.

We Are Not Alone: Elgyem and Beheeyem are not the only examples of extraterrestrial Pokemon. Deoxys of course is a big one, but this type of Pokemon has been around since Generation One. I don’t think I need to remind anyone of the Clefairy evolution line, which seem to show up near meteorite crashes, and in the anime have been shown to be capable of building spacecraft. Then we have Staryu and Starmie, which have been said to gather at night to flash their cores in order to communicate with the stars and emit strange radio signals. And of course there’s Solrock and Lunatone, which are both known as Meteorite Pokemon. In fact in the anime it was stated that the astronaut father of gym leaders, Liza and Tate, had brought the Solrock and Lunatone they used back from a space mission.

There are other Pokemon that have been suggested to be from space, such as the Jigglypuff evolution line. This is most likely due to their heavy resemblance and similar evolution methods to the Clefairy family. It’s also been suggested that Mew is from space as well. For one thing Mew is said to be the ancestor of all Pokemon, which would include those from space. Of course Arceus seems to have refuted that theory somewhat. But then of course we have the famous seen from the anime of a glowing Mew flying through space, the screenshot of which was used for the background of this world.

I think that about wraps things up for this week. I haven’t really decided what Pokemon I’ll cover for next week, but seeing as how we’re in October it’ll probably be a Ghost Pokemon. So until next week, keep watching the skies.
