Interesting Specimen: Spiritomb

We’re in the middle of October, so I thought for the next two weeks I’d do some Interesting Specimen Posts about a couple of Ghost Pokemon. For this I’ve decided to cover one of the fourth generation’s more malevolent ghosts, Spiritomb.

The best image I could find for this post was of a Spritomb being held by a Kecleon, but it is kind of a cool image. Anyway, there are a few factors that qualify Spiritomb as an Interesting Specimen. The first is that each Spiritomb is said to be composed of 108 evil spirits. Whether or not these spirits were once human or not is unknown. Another thing to consider is that Spiritomb have male and female genders, so one has to wonder if each evils spirit that makes up a Spiritomb are of the same gender.

Another factor that makes Spiritomb an interesting Pokemon is that it’s probably the first Pokemon that seems genuinely evil. I mean the Spiritomb were all sealed into Keystones, mainly because they were conglomerations of evil spirits. I mean they were sealed away for doing bad deeds and causing mass destruction. And yet they can be captured and used like any other Pokemon. The third factor that lands Spiritomb in the Interesting Specimen category is the method used to summon and capture it, which I’m about to get into.

In the Games: Spiritomb can be found in Diamond, Pearl, and I assume Platinum, but the method to capture it is very long and complicated. The first step is to obtain an item known as the Odd Keystone and take it to a place known as the Hollowed Tower. The structure is not so much a tower but more like an old well, but I digress. Throw the Keystone into the tower/well and then go to the Sinnoh Underground. There, you must talk to 32 different people, and NPCs in the underground don’t count.

But you can talk to the same person thirty-two times by entering and leaving your Secret Base in the underground. After thirty-two interactions, go back to the Hallowed Tower and interact with it. When you do, a level twenty-five Spiritomb will appear. This is a pretty involved ritual to summon a Pokemon that isn’t even Legendary. I mean breaking the seals to get to the Legendary Golems in Generation Three was easier. Though I will admit that the process to summon Spiritomb isn’t as difficult to capture a Roaming Legendary Pokemon.

Training Evil: So despite being malevolent and sealed away, Spiritomb can still be captured and trained like any ordinary Pokemon. It kind of makes you wonder just how evil Spiritomb truly are. Of course the only character in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum is Cythia, the champion of the Sinnoh League. So I guess you have to be a really skilled trainer in order to train Spiritomb.

That about covers it for this week’s post. For next week I’ll be taking about another Ghost Pokemon from Generation Four. So until then, stay tuned.
