On the Dark Side: Umbreon

One of the best things that Generation Two did in my opinion is introduce one of my favorite Pokemon types, the Dark-type. There have been a lot of cool Pokemon that are of that type. So I’ve decided to do a weekly series that covers a lot of the different Dark Pokemon that have come out in the history of the games. And I thought I’d start by covering one of my favorite Eeveelutions, Umbreon.

I’ve already done an Interesting Specimen post about Eevee and its various evolved forms (except for Sylveon), but it seemed only appropriate that I started this series by doing a more in-depth post on Umbreon since it was one of the first Dark-types. Anyway, Umbreon’s glowing rings have been known to strike fear into those who see it at night. It’s these same rings that allow Umbreon to use moves like Flash and I’m guessing Confuse Ray. It also has the ability to produce toxic sweat when threatened. Since the only way to get Umbreon in the mainstream games is to evolve Eevee, I’ll just skip ahead to the evolution section of the post.

Evolution: When Eevee’s happiness level is at the max while training at night, the light of the moon causes a change in Eevee’s genetic structure, evolving it into Umbreon. Umbreon was usually the first Eeveelution I tried to get when playing the Gen. Two games. Though for me it seemed like these happiness-based evolutions took forever to get. I remember in one game I had almost gotten all eight badges and Eevee still hadn’t evolved into Umbreon. And I used the little guy in practically every battle. Plus I’d use every status enhancer I found on him. I wonder if that kind of evolution method got easier in Generation Four.

Gary’s Umbreon: I’d thought I’d close this post by talking about the Umbreon used by Ash’s original rival in the anime, the one used by Gary. The Pokemon first appearance was as an Eevee that fought and utterly defeated Ash’s Pikachu. Its next appearance was as an Umbreon defeating another Trainer’s Alakazam. For a time it was believed by many fans that Umbreon was Gary’s first Pokemon due to his game counterpart from Pokemon Yellow having an Eevee as his starter. But then it turned out that his first Pokemon was a Blastoise that he got as a Squirtle, which is a little weird since Ash’s Pikachu would have type advantage.

Well, that about covers it for this post. Short, I know. But then I guess I was talking about a Pokemon that I covered a little once before. Plus I’ve been a bit sick today. Anyway, stay tuned for next week’s edition of On the Dark Side.
