Mega Factor: Metagross

This next post is actually something of a revisit, since I covered the Pokemon I’m about to talk about in one of me earliest Interesting Specimen posts. A lot of time has gone by since I first made that post though, and this is one Mega Evolution that really needs to be covered.

This is Mega Factor!

Our next Pokemon is one of the third generation’s Pseudo-Legendary Pokemon, as well as an old favorite of mine. Presenting the ace Pokemon of the Hoenn Region Champion, Metagross.

The third generation was the generation where I kind of called it quits with the Pokemon games. The main reason was due to a lack of foresight. I was so disappointed that the original Ruby and Sapphire versions didn’t include a lot of the Pokemon from previous generations that after a while I just couldn’t get into the games anymore. I never anticipated that the remakes of FireRed and LeafGreen would be made. Despite my dissatisfaction with Ruby and Sapphire though, there were still a lot of Pokemon from the third generation that I really liked, and Metagross was one of them. It had such a cool design and one particularly awesome attack that I’ll get into later. From the moment I first saw Metagross during the Elite Four battles, I became determined to train one of my own. After seeing how impressive Metagross’s Mega Evolution is, a part of me wishes that I continued getting the mainstream Pokemon games.

Normal Evolution: I covered Metagross’s natural evolution pretty well in my original Interesting Specimen post, so I won’t get into it very much here. For those of you reading who do want to find out more, go ahead and use the tags for Beldum, Metang and Metagross at the bottom of this post to navigate to that original Interesting Specimen post. The quick and dirty summary of this Pokemon’s evolution is that it starts out as Beldum and only knows the attack, Takedown. At level twenty, Beldum evolves into Metang, and at level forty-five Metang evolves into Metagross. Now onto the main topic of this post!

Mega Evolution: I really am amazed by how cool the design of Metagross’s Mega Evolution is. In this form, Metagross looks more like a spaceship. Anyway, in addition to gaining a cooler design, Metagross’s Mega Evolution also gives it some vastly improved physical attack and defense stats. Its special attack and defense stats get a slight boost as well, along with its speed stat. Upon Mega Evolution, Metargoss’s ability changes to one called Hone Claws, which gives a boost to attacks that make physical contact with the opponent. This ability combined with the boost to Metagross’s physical attack stat make moves like the one I’m about to talk about very potent indeed.

Signature Move:
The attack I’m about to talk about isn’t really Metagross’s signature move, since Clefairy and one of the forms of Cosplay Pikachu can also learn it too. Still, it is the attack that really made me want to train a Metagross of my own. The attack I’m talking about is a move called Meteor Mash. Basically, Meteor Mash is an improved version of Metal Claw. In addition to doing some major damage, Meteor Mash also has a chance of increasing Metagross’s attack stat. What I really liked about Meteor Mash in Ruby and Sapphire though was the awesome visual effect it had. This really cool starscape would appear just before the attack landed a blow on the opponent.

That pretty much covers it for this week’s post. Next week I’ll be talking about yet another Pokemon from Generation One that was blessed with the gift of Mega Evolution. Until next time, stay tuned.
