The Need to Drive

Ladies and gentlemen, Journey.

Forgive me if I've used the above music video for a post once before, but I've kinda gotten it stuck in my head since Friday (better that song than a certain tune by Earth, Wind, and Fire that was used in two T.V. show episodes that I watched recently). Anyway, just thought I'd do a little post to let everyone know how I've been. For the most part I think I've been doing okay. Lately though I've been feeling overwhelmed by the amount of work I've been having to do for my online classes. Last week I had an avalanche of assignments dumped on me. I really think that the instructor for my one class has some very unreal expectations about the work she wants her students to do. I guess if I was just taking the one class, it wouldn't be too big of a problem, but the fact is I'm taking two classes right now. That compresses the time I have to get stuff done.

So last Friday after I got the remaining assignment I had to do for my classes done, I decided to just take a drive out of town to get to a bookstore for some manga. Specifically I was looking for the sixth volume of the Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL manga, which isn't half bad despite the fact that a couple of characters from the anime that I like are missing from it. I had tried to get that volume two weeks before on a trip with my aunt and couldn't find it. This time though I did find that volume. There was just one copy of it left at the store, so I think I timed the trip just right. A phrase that initially came to mind when I thought back over the incident was, "If you want something done right, you've got to do it yourself." But then the reality is that if I had driven to the bookstore myself those two weeks ago instead of hitching a ride with my aunt, the result probably would've been the same.

Even so, I think the take away from all this is that for at least one afternoon I was able to take control of my own destiny. And by doing so I came away with a success, albeit a minor one perhaps. Lately it's seemed like just about everything else has been kind of out of my control. I think that drive I took out of town was my way of trying to take some of that control back. Anyway, I just wanted to share that with everyone. I hope everyone else had a good weekend. For me it's been kind of a bittersweet weekend because of the death of the great Leonard Nimoy. Yesterday I had my own little memorial viewing of Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country in Mr. Nimoy's honor. That viewing unfortunately was ruined a little by an argument I ended up having with my dad, but I'm not going to get into that.

That about does it for this post. Until next time.
