Anime Name: Princess Tutu
Subbed, Dubbed, Both: Both
Number of Episodes: 26
Age Scale: Tv 1 (for mild language and bloodless violence)
Summary: Princess Tutu centers around the adventures of a duck name….Duck. One day, Duck is given a pendent by a mysterious man called Herr Drosselmeyer. Not only does this pendent allow her to turn into a human girl, but with it, she can also transform into the magical ballerina “Princess Tutu”. Her goal is to find and return the heart shards of Mytho, a prince from a storybook come alive. However, what starts out as a simple job quickly turns sinister, as there are those who would do almost anything to stop Mytho from regaining his heart. Things become even more complicated as Duck/Princess Tutu begins to have feelings for the Prince, as it is said that the moment Princess Tutu confesses her love, she shall turn into a speck of dust and vanish. Not to mention Herr Drosselmeyer himself is planning to turn all of this into the greatest tragedy ever read…
Personal Opinion: Princess Tutu is a brilliant anime. At first glance, it may seem to be just another “magical story”, however it ends up being a twisted tale that even some non-anime fans may enjoy. One thing I have to mention about the anime is the Music. The background music in each episode is actually music from ballets/classical composers. Princess Tutu features everything from “Waltz of the Flowers” to Satie’s Gymnopédies. However, some of the characters (especially some of the minor characters) can seem flat, 2-dimensional, and rather cliché at times, and the first few episodes go rather slowly, but that may be just me. In all, I believe Princess Tutu is worth watching.
1-5 Scale: 4.3 out of 5
Where You Can Watch: All episodes can be watched dubbed here at The Anime Network (it’s legal too!) or at their youtube channel. I’m not sure where you can find it subbed, but I wouldn’t see why you would need to, as the dub stays extremely faithful to the original.
