The word origami originated from the Japanese words “oru” meaning folded and “kami” meaning paper. The origin of origami remains unknown, but many theories exist. One theory is that origami originated with the Shinto religion since “kami” also means god or deity, but the ancient pronunciations were different.
The art of paper folding also developed in Europe, but historians don’t believe that it is connected to Japanese origami since the styles are very different, and since European paper folding and Japanese origami both developed during a period where Japan was isolated from the rest of the world. When Japan opened its borders and integrated with western culture, western paper folding and Japanese origami combined into the origami we know today.
