My Mexican friends are going crazy over this Mexico vs. Uruguay game. It's kind of funny. Oh, World Cup. You have brought me so much entertainment so far. Especially regarding the French team. lololololololol
June 17, 1994 (2010): This documentary splices footage of one day in the sports world 16 years ago. The events include: Arnold Palmer's final round in his final U.S. Open; the New York Rangers' victory parade after winning the Stanley Cup; game five in the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the Houston Rockets; the opening of the World Cup; and, the event everyone remembers, Al Cowlings and O.J. Simpson leading the LAPD on a long chase. I was only 8 years old at the time, so I didn't understand how utterly insane this was, but it's quite bizarre to watch in retrospect. One image that struck me as particularly insane is that groups of people actually stopped on freeway overpasses and cheered O.J. on during the chase. What in the hell?? This has to be the weirdest day in sports history.
Nobel Son (2007): Entertaining thriller about the kidnapped son of an abrasive Nobel Laureate (played by Alan Rickman, of course). The plot unfolds at a good pace, and there are plenty of good twists. A couple of things I didn't like, though: The movie is full of the stupid hyperactive cinema style I despise (random cutting, random slow motion, etc.), and it's at its overly distracting worst in this movie. Ugh. The techno soundtrack is also terrible.
Invictus (2009): I was kind of disappointed in this, actually. For a movie with such a powerful real-life story (the South African rugby team's victory in the World Cup making some headway in healing the country's deep racial wounds in the aftermath of Apartheid), it sure feels soulless and by-the-numbers. It's like Cliffs Notes history; I get the feeling that reading about the events would have been a hell of a lot more dramatic and interesting. It's not as if anyone in the movie puts on a bad performance, but the movie is just solid instead of great like it should be (and wants to be).
On the queue for this week: I swear to god this is the final time Soylent Green (1973) will be on here, The Two Escobars (2010)
