I think everyone who usually votes and watches has already voted, but just in case, the next movie poll is up right here.
Chinatown (1974): Classic movie, even better than I remembered. (The plot is also easier to follow the second time around lol.) A lot of film noir is predicated on being dark (duh) and cynical, but Chinatown really dives headfirst into the darkness, especially with the ending. But it's also great fun to see Jack Nicholson at his smarmiest.
Hoosiers (1986): For my money, the best pure sports movie I've ever seen. The formula just does not get any better than this. (Of course, I'm also biased since I love basketball so very much. Man, look at those fundamentals! *nosebleed*) Every character and relationship is written to perfection ... probably the best is Dennis Hopper's alcoholic basketball whiz, Shooter. And the final game is just a thing of beauty; again, I love it when sports movies just show two teams of equal strength bringing out the best in each other rather than making one team into an easy hero and the other into an easy villain.
One last thing: Gene Hackman's laughter in this movie creeps me out. He sounds like he is going to kill someone!
The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra (2004): Watched with Molly, still holds up. All you MST3K fans (or just fans of old, bad sci-fi movies in general) need to watch this. Just a fun, goofy spoof of all those movies everyone loves. I SLEEP NOW.
Inherit the Wind (1960): Wow, this was made in 1960? This movie is ridiculously ahead of its time in terms of content -- no schmaltz, no simplification of its message, provides depth on both sides (arguing evolution vs. a fundamentalist interpretation of the Bible) and is constantly interesting throughout. Basically the complete opposite of most Hollywood social pictures at the time. Maybe the one weak point is the crazy preacher. That character is a bit too over the top with the hellfire and brimstone act and is just a ridiculous caricature rather than a truly believable character like everyone else.
Airplane! (1980): Absolutely holds up in every way and is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen; just about every joke hits the mark. (And there are a lot of jokes, since basically every frame is packed with something funny.) My favorite line provides the title of this post, but there's so much other stuff that is basically as funny, and I'd be here all day if I tried to list it all.
On the queue for this week: Emperor of the North (1973), Goldfinger (1964)
