I understand what you mean. Hopefully if/when I update it should work because this laptop is only a year and a half old and it has the next best program under 10.
If your laptop has "mileage" as you say, maybe upgrading isn't the best idea. Long story short, my Windows 7 computer couldn't handle Windows 10. And it was practically brand new at the time. Thankfully, a downgrade was covered by the warranty.

Mine does that, too. But 10 is one of those brand new programs as opposed to an update.
