While watching this I became more sympathetic and in agreement with the preachers in question--now there were a few things that I found very wrong with what one or two of them said, but I'm not so keen on what this SO4J TV guy is saying.
But all-in-all concerning this "Prosperity Gospel" subject which seems to be at the heart of this whole debacle, I have some opinions about it that I think should be explained in another post.
I'm fine with people being passionate, but over dramatising stuff can be a bit weird sometimes. It was the wrong theology I have more of an issue with haha.
I agree, I think that fame and notoriety can cloud a semblance of truth or conviction to the practice. It's common among many things, not just religious teaching.
I'm split on the dramatics part of it. While it appears weird an unnecessary, I feel like people have a hard time "letting loose" so to speak, or at least feeling comfortable to have a passionate way of speaking, but there are some things that I think go way over the line.
I haven't watched all the videos yet, but I agree with what you are saying. I'm rather uncomfortable with some of these super-popular teachers. I think, as with most things, it is important to be discerning when you read/listen to people. I'm not saying all of them are bad or anything, but just that people have to use their brains too.
On a side note, I've never been a fan of overly dramatic preachers XD just my preference. But then that's due to my personality so...
And that video about tithing is just so, ugh. He's so wrong! But it does make him sound crazy so I wonder how all his followers are swallowing what he says about shooting people! He's manipulating people, and they should know better. I'm not saying NOT to tithe, but the way he is talking is like it will pay your way into heaven and that is NOT RIGHT. This has made me really angry. Whatever happened to being humble and thankful? Guess the fame has gone to his head, and that's sad.
Also, because he's popular (though I have to admit I hadn't heard of him previously, but perhaps my Mum has) his misleading views are so much more damaging. Like you said, well known people end up representing Christians as a whole, even if their views aren't something we all agree on.
I honestly think that if I showed these videos to people in my local church they'd be really upset. I'M upset.
