Someone Who Understands

KEEFER

I'm not a people person. Okay, that doesn't quite cover it. Take the most anti-social person you know, imagine them five times worse and you have me on a good day. I did NOT like people. And here I was, stuck with a bunch of strangers and I didn't know what most of them were. All I really knew was the vampire who'd found me, Sebastian I think his name was, and Akira. She was like me, and I wasn't really sure that was a good thing. All mixed in with girls with weird colored skin and guys with wings and stuff.

On top of all that, things I'd been trying to bury kept fighting their way to the top. Bad memories, guilt, fear....yeah, I get scared. I'll admit it to myself. Sometimes. And this time I wasn't doing well at fighting it off. And it would be the day Akira would try to talk to me.

I was sitting in the corner when she came over.

"Hello."

I hoped if I ignored her she'd go away. No such luck.

"Are you alright?"

"Fine." I knew it came out pretty sharp.

"I am Akira."

"Good for you."

"Are you always such a jerk?"

"Yes." I stood up and looked at her. "Got a problem with that?" My Irish accent was a little stronger than normal, a sign I was frustrated. But she didn't know that.

"Why? We've been nothing but nice to you. You were living on the street before, remember?"

"I was fine."

"Of course you were."

"I don't NEED anyone!"

She just looked at me. "I never said you did. But you have people who understand you here. You want to be an a** and push them all away, that's your choice."

She was right. I didn't want to admit it, but what she said was true. These people, to some extent, knew what I felt like. At least the monster part. So maybe I could give this a shot. Not like I had anything to lose.

"I'm sorry, Akira. I know I'm...difficult. But everyone I've tried to trust has just stabbed me in the back."

"We won't."

"I don't know that. But I'm gonna try. Just....I need space for a while."

She nodded. "I understand."

"Thanks...." I think my smile surprised her. Surprised me too. And it kind of felt good to smile. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all.

So this shows a little more about Keefer. Of course some things are still in the dark, and his memories will be haunting him for quite a while. But hopefully this helps a little.
