So Close...

Please excuse Keefer's language today. He's angry and his dark side is coming out more.
I really hope what I did with Melina is okay. Keefer might need some of the other characters' help, and they'll probably have to stop him from trying to find her alone too.
And my apologies on the length. Although technically it's three parts, so I guess that's not too bad, I'm just giving them one title.

KEEFER
After I snapped at Karin, I did my best to be MIA for a few days. I didn't want to leave any sooner than I had to. I actually kinda liked this place, for once, and if I left, I had now clue where I'd go. I'd been living in an alley until Sebastian found me. So no matter how much I wasn't used to people, this was by far better than what I was used to. But there was no way they'd want me here now. I'd shown my monster side.

It was almost dark when I finally made up my mind to leave. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to sneak around a mansion. People kept coming around corners, or out of random doors....it was a nightmare. But I finally made it and slid under my bed to grab my stuff.

"Keefer?"

I froze. What was Dante doing in my......bloody h***....I'd left the door open.

"What do you want?"

"What are you doing?"

"Nothing. Just feel like being under my bed."

"Where will you go, Keefer?"

I growled and rolled out from under the bed. "What are you, a bloody mind reader?" There was the accent again. "And what do you care, anyway?"

"I don't want you to get hurt. And neither would your sister."

D*mn him! "So do I stay here and where a muzzle, or whatever they'll want me to do?"

"What?" He got a confused look on his face and I rolled my eyes.

"Oh come on. You know what happened with Karin."

"You got mad and snapped a little, Keefer. It could happen to anyone."

Right. Anyone can show a set of wolf fangs at somebody when they get mad.

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have interfered. Just remember, you're not alone here, Keefer. And you're not a monster."

Before I could say anything, he was gone. How did he...it seriously felt like he'd been in my head. Now what should I do? Was he right? Would I be okay staying? I finally flopped back on the bed. The picture of Melina on the nightstand was smiling at me, like she'd heard the whole conversation.

“I wish you were here, Mel. You always helped me hang onto my sanity.” But even Melina didn’t know just how much of a monster I really was. And I hoped she never would.

MELINA

It already seemed like forever since Keefer’s phone call. I missed him so much…I wondered if he still looked the same. I hadn’t seen him in years. Honestly, I didn’t even know where he was. The last call had probably been from a pay phone somewhere. Keefer was always careful not to tell me where he was, and I always wondered why. It kind of scared me. What was my brother into that he couldn’t tell me about?

With a sigh, I readjusted the cap on my head. It was a little faded, and the pawprint drawn on it wasn’t perfect and the ‘M’ was a little crooked. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything. He’d drawn the pawprint himself because I had always loved wolves and dogs, even since I was little. Ironic, considering everyone had thought he was the only one with wolf blood. He still didn’t know I could shift too. No one did. Or at least, so I thought.

“Melina! Somebody’s here for you!”

For me? No one ever came here to see me… Curious, I slipped out of my room and down the stairs. My foster parents were standing by the door, which was odd, and a man dressed in a suit stood inside.

“Melina, this man wants to talk to you.”

“Um….who is he?”

“Just someone very interested in you, Miss O’Connor. Walk with me and I’ll explain everything.”

Something in my head screamed no. Something was off with this guy. But by the look on my foster-dad’s face, I didn’t have much choice, so I put on a brave smile and stepped outside.

We walked in silence until we were away from the house, then the man spoke. “You’re a very special girl, Melina.”

“I’m no different from anyone else….”

He chuckled. “Don’t be so modest, my dear. I know what you can do.”

Instantly the hair on the back of my neck stood up. “What do you mean?”

“You are just like your brother. Although not as strong.”

“I’m going back. Whatever you want, I’m not interested.”

Before I could turn, he grabbed my arm and twisted sharply, and I couldn’t help but yelp. “Oh no you don’t. I’m not losing you now.”

I hadn’t even noticed the van following us, but I didn’t even get the chance to scream before I was thrown inside. “What do you want with me?!”

“You’ll see, my dear. You’ll see.”

KEEFER

There it was. Melina’s foster home. I couldn’t believe I’d gotten up the nerve to come here. I mean, I hadn’t really thought it was safe, but still, she was my sister. And now I could finally see her, even if it was just through a window. Maybe they’d even let me….blue and red flashing lights? I froze instantly. What were cops doing there? I took a few steps back, trying to decide if I should keep going or run. If they saw me, they might blame me for whatever it was. If I ran….I might not come back. Why did this always have to happen?!

It took ten minutes before I made up my mind to at least see what was going on. There was a woman crying and going on about something, and a man hugging her and talking to the officer.

“They said they were from her school, and we had no reason to doubt it…then they were just gone.”

“Can you describe the man, sir?”

What?! Melina was gone? No! Fighting the curse that tried to jump out of my mouth, I turned away. Who would take my sister? Why? I was the one they’d be after, not…

Something on the street caught my eye, and I snatched it up. A light grey hat, with a pawprint. No….she never would’ve left it. Not on purpose. She never went anywhere without it. A low growl rumbled in my throat.

“I don’t know who you are, but you can bet I’ll find you, and if you’ve hurt her you’ll beg for me to kill you before I’m done. And no force on earth will save you.”
