Setting Sun

I should’ve expected it. And it shouldn’t have come as such a surprise.

When Griffin called off the names of those who would accompany him to XL, I knew I wouldn’t be one of the few called. I was too weak, too fragile, to do any good for myself, let alone those who needed our help.

But... despite having been certain of my fate, I couldn’t help but feel furious and insulted. I can help. I can do something. I need... I need to help them! I need to... save him.

It was futile. No matter how much I could have argued, Griffin was as stubborn as a bull; I’d never get him to see from my perspective. He saved me, Griffin. Why can’t you understand that I need to save him now?

Sighing, I rested my chin my my hands, perching beside the zombie girl, Nai-Hina. Like me, she had been rejected by the mighty overlord wyvern, and, at the moment, we were both moping about.

While I wasn’t sure who she was, really, or why she seemed so down, I felt as though I could connect with the shy doll. So long as she didn’t try and eat me...

“I... take it you have to stay behind, too?” I queried, drawing her mismatched gaze to mine. After a few moments of silence, she nodded.

“Yes, I... I guess Griffin doesn’t see what I can do. But that’s alright...” she murmured. Feeling a surge of compassion, I lightly patted her arm, subjecting myself to as much physical contact as I was comfortable with. Not including with Ace.

“Don’t worry about it. He’s... kinda...”

“A jerk?” she supplied. A short giggle escaped my lips as I nodded before I grew solemn once more.

After a few moments of silence passed, I turned away from the girl, content with our conversation. I guess this club was good for me after all. I can talk to people now. I met... Ace. Only, now, Ace was cooped up in some dingy laboratory being experimented on and tortured. He might even be... I gulped. Oh, God, no.

As tears sprung to my eyes, I wiped at them, bowing my head. From out of the blue, a familiar, heel-clad brunette leaped before me, peeling my hands away from my face.

“Come on, Sol. Don’t have the blues!” Riley chirped, tugging me to my feet. “Lighten up! Dance! Relax!” I yanked my wrists away from her.

“Riley, I... I’m not in the mood to be dancing or relaxing. Ace... the others...” I began, choking up.

“They’ll be fine, silly girl. Master Riley, mustachioed ninja, is on the case!” With a few, exaggerated “karate” moves, Riley demonstrated her faux ferocity. Sighing, I shook my head, a brief smile fluttering across my lips.

“Then I guess we’re safe in your capable hands?” I asked, laying my hands in my lap. She flashed me a brilliant grin, draping an arm around my shoulders.

“You betcha! Speaking of which, I gotta go talk to Griffith over there. I’ve got some ideas for some songs to play on our mission!” Humming the Mission Impossible theme song as she slunk away, Riley began her search for the wyvern.

“Guess that’s that, then,” Nai whispered. “What are we even going to do? Sit around and...” Biting her lip, she cut herself off.

“We stay strong,” I responded without a second thought. “We have to stay upbeat while the others prepare to leave.” How I’d managed to secure such strength and dignity, I wasn’t sure. “Don’t lose faith. We have to be their source of hope and... and optimism while we still can.”

Nodding, she met my stare.

“You’re right.” With a genuine smile, she patted my hand, her hard skin cold even to me. “Thank you. I’m glad there’s someone I can relate to here.”

As I turned away, watching as the few people selected to embark on the deadly mission in less than a week’s time bustled about, I nodded. I’d never imagined I could relate to such a strange creature.

In the light of the setting sun, the four others to accompany the Greek and the vampire seemed to be preparing themselves mentally as they should have been.

Except for the nymph boy; he was nowhere to be seen.

Shrugging, I figured it was of little importance; he’d be back eventually in time to help our friends, I assumed.

Mind weary and eyelids dropping, I bid farewell to the doll girl, settling down on a comfortable area to sleep. None of us would dare to separate now, no matter how much we disliked each other’s company. We had to stick together; we were all that was left.

After watching the few scampering members of the club as they fought to distract their minds, I closed my eyes, eager to escape into my dreams or lack thereof and forget about the horror that faced us all in the coming days.
