I was glad to see everyone else enjoying themselves (for the most part), but clubbing was not my thing. After a mere four minutes of sweaty encounters and a deafening bassline, I had seen enough.
Sebastian decided to stay behind at the hotel. Finding this unusual, I offered to keep him company.
“No, no, Karin. Go and have fun for me, okay? I think I just need to rest.” He gave me a small smile before softly closing his door.
I let out a little sigh as I closed the club's exit door behind me. Besides the muffled hum of the rave, the urban air was crisp and filled with the strange mingling of cricket chirps and cars passing in the distance. I stopped for a moment to take in the relatively fresh air.
The hotel was no more than a block away. Even with my nonexistant sense of direction, I could see the edge of its blinking neon sign from where I stood. Tugging my jacket's collar closer to my neck, I decided to head back to my room.
As I neared my destination, a loitering group of loud young men appeared. With my luck, they decided to occupy the corner just in front of the hotel. My heartbeat sped up ever so slightly as my fears took hold of the reins in my imagination. To be honest, they were probably harmless. But just to be safe, I decided to go through the back entrance of the hotel instead.
Just before I reached the back door, I heard familiar, unsettling murmurs. I immediately recognized Vevila's whispers tinged with lust, and that fake, throaty laughter she let out for those she seduced. My stomach flipped over as my legs refused to go any farther. Oh my God, she's going to kill a German dude, I thought immediately, and my blood turned to ice.
Without really thinking it through, I decided that I had to stop her, somehow. I crept towards her voice, which was bouncing off the walls of a secluded alley just behind the hotel. Nearing the alley's entrance, I could just make out the voice of a man replying to her. His voice was much softer, and it seemed as though he wished to keep their meeing a secret. Vevlia paid him no mind.
“Oh, would you relax? It's just the two of us, I promise.” Vevila let out an excited, almost childish giggle. The man's reply was inaudible. “Please, she won't be back for hours. We have plenty of time.” My ears strained, but again I could not make out his words. “Look,” Vevila's voice suddenly became a dark growl, “I'm hungry. You're hungry. So shut up before I find someone else to take your place.”
At that moment, the men at the corner erupted with a echoing laugh that all three of us clearly heard. My ears twitched nervously. Vevila gave a little “Hm,” before saying, “They sound like strong young souls. If you're so nervous, why not just snack on one of them? I might just do the same if you don't stop whining.”
A dreadful pang resounded throughout my chest. I knew who the man was, but I needed to prove myself wrong. I silently retreated into the shadows, as close as I could get without being seen. I finally heard the anxious voice whispering, “Okay-- I'm sorry. Just do it....”
I peered around the corner just in time to see Vevila throw herself onto Sebastian. I watched in horror as he allowed her lips to dance across his own. Sebastian's hands gripped the alley wall behind him, painfully scratching at the dirty brickwork. Vevila barely gave him the time or space to breathe, drinking him in like a glass of cold lemonade on a humid summer day.
With every passing second, my despair continued to heighten. I didn't have a plan to begin with, but at that moment I was absolutely floored.
Sebastian's knees gave out from under him, but Vevila simply followed his lips down, cupping his face in those ugly, ugly hands. Then his arms went limp, and his head rolled back completely, surrendered perfectly to her lips.
She was killing him.
“HEY!!!!” I shrieked, and Vevila's head jerked toward me like that of a wild animal. When she let go of his head, his body crumpled to the ground. I ran to him on trembling knees and took his head out of the shallow puddle it had landed in.
“Stoooop screaming,” she droned, offering her palms in a sarcastic surrender. “He'll be fine. Probably,” she added under her breath.
“GO!” I screamed to the leech, my voice breaking, and she ran away satisfied with her midnight snack.
“Sebby,” I called, smacking his face with increasing intensity as he didn't reply. “Sebastian, open your eyes right now!! AAGH!!” After a few minutes screaming and slapping that felt like hours, his eyes finally fluttered open and his gaze slowly drifted towards me.
“Uh-- you- okay, lehdy?” a nervous voice called from behind me. One of the German men from the hotel corner cautiously approached the edge of the alley. “We- hear you, er...” as he struggled to find the English word that explained my frantic panic, his two friends joined him warily.
“Ah, you see, my...friend--” I gestured to Sebastian, softly stirring in my arms, “I think he had too much to drink,” I called, biting my lip as the lie came out. “Could...could you please help me? Help me take him to his room-” I pointed at the hotel just behind them, and they understood, more or less. Murmuring amongst themselves in German, two of them grabbed Sebastian's shoulders and heaved him onto his feet. Sebastian stumbled after a couple steps and cast a bewildered, half conscious glance at me. I couldn't look at him.
After the kind German men had helped Sebastian to his bed, I thanked them profusely and bid them farewell at the door. Fighting back the violent twitches and hiccups that always plague my tears, I poured him a cold glass of water and sat on the edge of the bed facing away from him.
