Calista Devellis Chapter 3

"thank you so much for helping me out Calista." Alex smiled as he quickly got the girl into his house.
"No prob. I'm just happy your Aunt of all people let me help." She gave a small smile and shrunk away from him when he took a step closer to her.
"She does like free labor. I guess she also took a liking to you after you first appeared to her." He guided her to the kitchen and gave her an apron that matched the pale colored one he wore.
"Why me?" She let go of her usual monotone voice to match the one he gave off.
"Well... Um.. maybe it's because your really pretty and she likes looking at things that are pretty." He scratched the side of his head than tried to change the subject. "Anyways you are going to help prepare the food and serve it to the guests that are coming by."
"do you have a list of the people coming or like where will they sit?" She stared down at the sharp butcher knife in front of her.
"The tennis table duh." He rolled his eyes and acted as if it was obvious.
"Har har. Let me guess, she was about to let you order pizza for them and buy some coke. the real coke." She punched his arm.
The house was large and one of the wealthier gains you can get for a house in the neighborhood. Sure it was large and had a large dinning room and pool, but it was not the best looking houses. most people didn't care. All she brought over were the worst of the worst.
Pain liked company didn't it? or was it misery?
"Here. Why don't you go and toss the salad. I'll cut the meat." He headed over to the cutting board and reached for the knife. Calista seemed to watch it all play out in slow motion, he moved so slowly it seemed, like he was in a trance. She remembered the the worst thing that came from their friendship, that almost killed everything they had accomplished.
"Optimist my er.. butt. You toss the salad. I'll cut the meat. I still don't trust you with knives. Especially large butcher knives." Calista beat him to the knife and started to wave it around. "i know you don't trust yourself either."
She turned to ignore any protest he wanted to make but he remained silent.
She started to cut the meat slowly then stopped and sighed. Calista turned her head and looked at the figure next to her, working diligently but slowly. She couldn’t tell if Alex would smile for a while but it was impossible in her mind, probably because Jenifer walked in at that time.
“Alexander hurry this up. The guests are here.” She then turned to notice Calista, “You are working so hard. I just wish I could trade you with my nephew and teach you all my ways!”
“Thank you for your offer Ms. Loris but I am afraid I have a home to go back to.” Calista went back to her monotone and watched as Jennifer left the room.
After about an hour or so it started to get dark and the bell had rung.
“I’ll get it. You’ve had enough.” She smiled at him as she had him sit down on the couch in the living room and left.
“Thank you.” His voice was hoarse and she could tell he was tired. ‘how could he go through this all the time? All the things that ass said were uncalled for.’ Calista sighed as she went for the door.
There stood a peculiar, pissed girl. Her white hair was matted against her face from sweat (it seemed) and she was playing with a basketball in her hand. She looked up at Calista with bored eyes.
In reply, Calista said, “So your another victim of life huh? Come on in. If you want an adult they are downstairs. Feel free to join us.”
“You don’t even know me!” The girl was confused.
“So? Anywho… want some food? Your probably hungry?” Calista led her to the kitchen then left out a doorway to get Alex. When he came in he looked up at the stranger and smiled.
“I’m Alex Loris and this is Calista Devellis. You must be knew in town, am I correct?” If Calista didn’t know any better, she would have thought that Alex had found a new friend, or another person of interest.
