Hey, Die Before I Wake here. I made this world, The War on Cruelty, for people who love animals and are sick of the abuse, neglect, fighting, etc. of innocent animals. Cruelty is not limited to the beating, starving, etc. of domestic animals. It also extends to the capture, harming, and murder of wild species, too, as well as destroying the only homes they've known.

Here, I will post my own, and club members' stories, drawings, poems, videos, slideshows, images, essays, songs, etc. pertaining to any way of animal mistreatment. I will also put up updates of specials on National Geographic, Animal Planet, etc., in case anyone's interested. I'll also soon have links and buttons up to sites where you can donate to help our furry, scaly, skin-covered, and feathered friends and their homes by either sponsoring, or by buying stuff from their shops.

I'll frequently be changing layouts, updating, and adding members, so message me if you want to join to submit things, or simply look for something good to watch on TV. Or, even to find inspiring videos, poems, etc. that you may wish to repost onto your own world!

Dog and Cat Insect Prevention = Poison?

I was watching the ABC world news. An article came up that stated that certain brands of dog and cat flea prevention medicine was causing serious illnesses in peoples' beloved pets.

Click here for the story, it includes a video, and a quote from an owner.

I think it was last year, 44,000 animals were sick. 1,200 died.

Please, if you have a cat or dog and use the pet products, make sure you are buying them from your veterinarian rather than over the counter ones you can buy at pet stores.

Victory for Seals in Europe!

I made this card to celebrate the decision made by the European Parliament - that seal products will no longer be placed on the market within the EU. This is a HUGE deal, seeing as it may stop the commercial seal hunt, where thousands of baby seals are clubbed (only sometimes to death) and skinned (often alive) for their fur.

I received the email from the Humane Society International. here is the email I received. The link will direct you to a web page instead of my email account, don't worry.

Canadian Seal Hunt: Is This the End?

The title of this post is the title of a magazine article in All Animals, a magazine of the The Humane Society of the United States. I can't find the article online, because the magazine is only sent out to members of the Humane Society who are at a $25 or more status.
I've typed this whole thing word for word.

Article Title: Canadian Seal Hunt: Is This the End?
Author: Rebecca Aldworth, Director of Canadian Wildlife Issues
Publication: All Animals
Issue: Summer 2008

"It's been a decade since I first saw blood staining the ice floes for miles during the annual commercial seal hunt off Canada's east coast. Nothing could have prepared me for it. Sealeres bashed in the skulls of defenseless pups, many of whom were still conscious as they were cut open and skinned. Terrified newborn seals crawled through the carnage. As I later walksed through the kill sites, so many eyes appeared to stare at me from the open graves where thousands of bodies lay.

"As the years have passed, these atrocities have continued in spite of liscencing guidelines purported by the Canadian government to make this globally condemned slaughter more humane. This spring, while I waited with the HSUS's ProtectSeals team to bear witness, agonizing minutes ticked by as the boats slowly maneuvered into place. We watched helplessly from the air as sealers shot at pups from huge distances. Too often, wounded seals thrashed in agony for the many minutes before sealers reached them. We could see them crying from a thousand feet away.

"One seal was clubbed 13 times before she finally lost consciousness. Injured, conscious seals were impales on steel hooks and dragged across the ice, tossed like garbage onto piles of dead and dying animals. Flouting regulation, the sealers we observed almost never checked to se if seals were unconscious before slicing them open.

"This year's slaughter was among the cruelest I've seen. But it could also be the last. In recent years, 10 nations have either prohibited trade in seal products or announced intentions to do so. Now, the European Union is considering a comprehensive ban on the trade- a move the sealing industry says could end the hunt. An EU ban would not only close European markets, but could also cut off exports to other areas such as China (Die Before I Wake's note: They mean cutting off seal exports, not everything else.)

"In fact, the mere threat of disappearing markets caused chaos in the industry this year. In 2008, sealers earned just $33 per pelt, down from more than $100 in 2006. The prices kept many sealers home, and tens of thousands of baby seals were spared a horrible fate, though more than 200,000 had perished by the end of May.

"While sealers likely earned less than $7 million from the hunt this year, the Canadian government spends tens of millions on Coast Guard servies, legal fees, and other activities to support sealers and counter international opposition. But the government may soon be forced to stop the seal kill to protect the fishing industry; since 2005, more than 4,000 companies and 600,000 people have signed onto the HSUS's ProtectSeals boycott of Canadian seafood. As a result, Canadian seafood sales to the U.S. have plummeted; snow crab exports have decreased in value by more than half a billion dollars.

"All this spells hope for a day when a seal's skin is valued not for its use in high-end fashion but for its rightful place on a seal's back. Then I can return to the ice and rejoice in the peace that's been restored to the killing fields."

HSUS's Canadian Seal Hunt Video.

You hear that? The clubbing and live-skinning of seal pups has a good chance of ending soon!

Cruelty Types in an Outline:

Over 285 Dogs Saved In Sparta

Z here. This is an article from the ASPCA.

The ASPCA’s best and brightest are currently on the ground in Sparta, TN, managing operations of a puppy mill raid that began Wednesday morning, February 11. Our forensic cruelty investigation team, led by Dr. Melinda Merck, ASPCA Senior Director of Veterinary Forensics, is evaluating dogs and collecting evidence for the future criminal prosecution of the puppy mill’s owners. Members of the ASPCA Disaster Response team and several of our legislative professionals are also assisting at the site.

More than 285 small-breed dogs—including Boston and Jack Russell terriers, Pomeranians, shih tzus, Chihuahuas, poodles, miniature pinschers and schnauzers—were recovered from multiple buildings on the raided property. According to Dr. Merck, the dogs are suffering from a general lack of basic care, such as little to no food or water, feces-encrusted pens and lack of proper ventilation in enclosed areas. Conditions such as matting, sores, mange, poor teeth and abscesses are widespread. Dogs in critical condition were examined immediately on the scene and in the Mobile Animal CSI Unit, and those needing emergency care were transferred to local veterinarians who have volunteered their services.

Local officials became concerned about this particular puppy mill last September after a visitor to the property—someone who had intended to purchase a dog—alerted the White County Humane Society to the poor conditions of the animals. The White County Sheriff’s Department began a formal investigation, ultimately enlisting the ASPCA’s support for this week’s raid. Other parties assisting in the rescue include American Humane Association, Nashville Humane Association, several local veterinarians and PetSmart Charities, which provided the majority of sheltering supplies and an emergency relief vehicle.

Back in June, the ASPCA assisted in the raid of a puppy mill in Lyles, TN—the state’s largest raid to date. Thankfully, the Tennessee General Assembly is taking action to address the state’s puppy mill problem—last week, a consumer protection bill addressing large-scale commercial breeders was introduced in the Senate; introduction of a House companion bill is expected soon.

How can you help to ensure a safe future for dogs like these? When you donate today, you will help us in all of our life-saving efforts, including ones like the puppy mill raid in Tennessee.
