Hey, Die Before I Wake here. I made this world, The War on Cruelty, for people who love animals and are sick of the abuse, neglect, fighting, etc. of innocent animals. Cruelty is not limited to the beating, starving, etc. of domestic animals. It also extends to the capture, harming, and murder of wild species, too, as well as destroying the only homes they've known.

Here, I will post my own, and club members' stories, drawings, poems, videos, slideshows, images, essays, songs, etc. pertaining to any way of animal mistreatment. I will also put up updates of specials on National Geographic, Animal Planet, etc., in case anyone's interested. I'll also soon have links and buttons up to sites where you can donate to help our furry, scaly, skin-covered, and feathered friends and their homes by either sponsoring, or by buying stuff from their shops.

I'll frequently be changing layouts, updating, and adding members, so message me if you want to join to submit things, or simply look for something good to watch on TV. Or, even to find inspiring videos, poems, etc. that you may wish to repost onto your own world!

National Holiday Tomorrow!!!

Tomorrow is probably the best holiday ever, well, in the US, anyway...

It's....

NATIONAL HUG A VEGETARIAN/VEGAN DAY!!!!!

I even made two special buttons for the occasion. One is a little piggy asking "Have YOU hugged a vegetarian today?" and another says "National Hug A Vegetarian Day" with a little carrot, a piece of broccoli, and a heart on it.

Wear green, dress like an animal, hug your friends, celebrate! You know... I think that I, and all the other club members, would just love to see some National Hug A Vegetarian/Vegan Day pictures from everyone.... HINT HINT HINT. NUDGE NUDGE NUDGE.

PS: Anyone submitting photos for the contest? Six days, people!

On A Lighter Note...

I received this story in an email. It's just one of the ways to prove that people need animals by their side to live:

"Mary and her husband Jim had a dog named 'Lucky.' Lucky was a real character. Whenever Mary and Jim had company come for a weekend visit they would warn their friends to not leave their luggage open because Lucky would help himself to whatever struck his fancy. Inevitably, someone would forget and something would come up missing.

Mary or Jim would go to Lucky's toy box in the basement and there the treasure would be, amid all of Lucky's other favorite toys. Lucky always stashed his finds in his toy box and he was very particular that his toys stay in the box.

It happened that Mary found out she had breast cancer. Something told her she was going to die of this disease....in fact, she was just sure it was fatal.

She scheduled the double mastectomy, fear riding her shoulders. The night before she was to go to the hospital she cuddled with Lucky. A thought struck her...what would happen to Lucky? Although the three-year-old dog liked Jim, he was Mary's dog through and through. If I die, Lucky will abandon Jim, Mary thought. He won't understand that I didn't want to leave him. the thought made her sadder than thinking of her own death The double mastectomy was harder on Mary than her doctors had anticipated and Mary was hospitalized for over two weeks. Jim took Lucky for his evening walk faithfully, but the little dog just drooped, whining and miserable.

Finally the day came for Mary to leave the hospital. When she arrived home, Mary was so exhausted she couldn't even make it up the steps to her bedroom. Jim made his wife comfortable on the couch and left her to nap. Lucky stood watching Mary but he didn't come to her when she called. It made Mary sad but sleep soon overcame her and she dozed. When Mary woke for a second she couldn't understand what was wrong. She couldn't move her head and her body felt heavy and hot. But panic soon gave way to laughter when Mary realized the problem. She was covered, literally blanketed, with every treasure Lucky owned! While she had slept, the sorrowing dog had made trip after trip to the basement bringing his beloved mistress all his favorite things in life. He had covered her with his love. Mary forgot about dying. Instead she and Lucky began living again, walking further and further together every day. It's been 12 years now and Mary is still cancer-free. Lucky? He still steals treasures and stashes them in his toy box but Mary remains his greatest treasure."

-shrugs- I believe it.

Recalled Dog Toy

This was sent in an email around the web. Some of you may have seen it, some of you may not have. It was recalled on August 14, 2008. It's a long one.

"On Sunday, June 22, 2008 my 10-year old lab mix, Chai, sustained a severe injury from a product that the company Four Paws Inc, produces. The toy I'm referencing is the pimple ball with bell. (Item #20227-001, UPC Code 0 45663202279)

While chewing on the toy, a vacuum was created and it effectively sucked his tongue into the hole in the ball. From speaking with my vet, this likely occurred because there is not a second hole in the ball preventing the vacuum effect from happening. I became aware of this when Chai approached a friend at my home whimpering with the ball in his mouth. She tried unsuccessfully to remove the ball but the tongue had swollen and could not be released.

Chai was taken to the Animal Medical Center (an emergency care facility in New York City) and was treated by Dr. Nicole Spurlock to have the ball removed. Because the size of the opening on the ball was so small, all circulation to his tongue was cut off. The doctors had to sedate him in order to remove it. Once the ball was removed, his tongue swelled to the point that he could no longer put it in his mouth. Chai was sent home with care instructions and to be observed overnight for any changes.

By the following morning Chai’s tongue had swollen even more.

He was taken to his regular vet, Dr. Timnah Lee, for treatment. He was admitted and kept sedated for a period of three days during which time they were treating his wounds and waiting to determine how much of his tongue could be saved. On June 26, 2008 Chai had his tongue amputated.

He was kept in after-care for an additional three days. On Sunday June 29th I brought Chai home from the vet with a barrage of home care instructions, to last for an additional 7 days. His next visit was to have his mouth re-examined and have the feeding tube in his neck removed.

(This is video of Chai showing the pain level that he had for the first three days despite being on heavy doses of pain medication)

On the way home from the vet we stopped at Petland Discount where I purchased their product to speak to the manager on duty. Upon meeting Chai and seeing his condition, he removed all of the balls in question from the shelves. He also gave me the customer service number to their corporate headquarters to request that they refuse to continue purchasing all Four Paws products, but I have not called them as of yet.

Additionally, I shared my story with friends who have a French Bulldog named Petunia. Upon hearing my story their eyes widened. They explained that the same thing happened twice in one night with a smaller version of the same ball to their dog. Fortunately, they were able to pull it off before the tongue swelled, but not without tremendous effort and pain to the dog. They recalled how horrific it was to hear their dog screaming while they had to pry the ball from her tongue.

To date, my veterinary bills total over $5000.00 and I will have regular follow up appointments for some time. Additionally, Chai now requires a much more expensive form of food because of this injury, averaging approximately $200 per month.

Also - I am Chai’s sole caretaker and the regime required to care for him following his surgery has forced me to lose a great deal of business. I am a hair stylist and my salon is in my home. Given that Chai needs constant attention, and given that he has been wailing in pain, I have not been able to see clients.

Additionally, I now have to re-teach my dog to eat, drink and adjust to life without his tongue. Just walking him requires about 30min twice a day and we only make it three blocks. Feeding him takes me about 90 minutes twice a day and for at least this first week he is not to be unattended for more than 20 minutes at time.

I sent this information along with the reference to Petunia the french bulldog to Four Paws Inc, and it is their position that there just aren't enough instances to do anything about this. I told their Insurance company's case manager that was not a good enough excuse, It was inferred that my dogs value wasn't much and that his pain and suffering don't count as he is just a piece of property.

This should never happen to another animal again!

I'M CALLING FOR AN INTERNATIONAL BOYCOTT OF ALL FOUR PAWS PRODUCTS UNTIL THIS PRODUCT IS RECALLED. We need your help, please take the time to make your voice heard."

No One's Interested Yet?

I haven't gotten any entries for the contest yet. Should I just forget about it or were the PM notices too long?

If you're not interested in the prizes, I'm sorry. They're not very good, I know, but I figured the contest would be something fun to do. -shrugs-
