Puffy Hair Tutorial

Someone on tumblr asked how I draw Lafayette's hair because they want to make a character with curly hair, so I made this quick tutorial thing for them! Idk how useful this'll be because I never know what I'm doing when I draw hair, but HERE IT IS ANYWAY! Also sorry for the weird quality photos and the abundance of eraser shavings...

Laf’s hair is actually more “puffy” than “curly” imo, but I basically do the same thing for curly hair except more tightly.

1) The first thing I start with for Laf is his bangs. The sides cover the tops of his ears and the middle touches the tops of his glasses (?? irrelevant info). Something that might help you out when drawing fluffy hair is that I put one of those ahoge things on top of his head to help me center the rest of his hair when I start drawing the Puff.

2) The next part is to draw the top puffy part. The motion I use for drawing the puffs works like this:

First you draw some sweet blobs:

After you do the blobs, you draw some cool tufts in between the blobs:

I do the tufts in 2 strokes to make them pointier. :^0 Also, I don’t necessarily do all the blobs followed by all the tufts, I kinda just go at whatever pace I feel like.

Here’s what the ~Blob and Tuft~ method looks looks like on Laf:

This is usually about where I stop when I’m drawing short-haired Laf.

I use this same weird blobby thing when I’m drawing Noland (who actually has curly hair), and it ends up looking something like this when I do it right. The difference between how I draw Noland and Laf’s puffiness is how tightly packed I make the blobs. But yeah.

3) Using the same Blob and Tuft method, I do the bottom half of his hair. I guess what’s notable here is that I make it flip out on the ends instead of continue the blobs.

4) After this is just detail work. BASICALLY! PUT RANDOM LINES EVERYWHERE…!!!! Okay actually, try to follow the flow of the hair as best you can. BUT!! IT’S NOT LIKE I KNOW WHAT I’M DOING ANYWAY.

And yeah, that’s basically it! Here’s the finished (?) thing.

I guess I should say here that I don’t necessarily do everything in this exact order when I’m drawing his hair, but this is like what I generally keep in mind in terms of organization when I’m drawing his hair.

ALSO this might be super obvious, but don’t be afraid to erase what you don’t like. REDRAW THOSE BLOBS IF U NEED 2… just thought I’d say b/c when I read tutorials I always feel like people do things perfectly the first time, but uh. Things rarely come out the way I want the first run through. In fact I kinda don’t like how his hair looks here but whatever;;; It gets the point across.

AND YEP, THAT'S ALL!
