This is a sketch from the original D.grey-man comic, 7 years before it was actually published. Back then the series was called Zone, and Allen was called Robin [no joke, but I hate that name... I've been calling him haru instead... =~=' don't ask...]...

in the original manga, allen tries to bring back his mother, and is thus turned into an akuma by the Earl. It's a completely different process from the newly released version "D.grey-man". In zone, the Earl tricks u into signing a hand written contract, u thinking it'll bring back ur loved one from the dead into the doll he has before u. However, the Ear comes at u from behind with a demon sword, forcing ur soul and mind into the doll, the contract binding u to him. Though there is a second step where he has to bind ur mind to keep u under his power which allen avoids, making him [some how] only half akuma.
