Last week I was sitting in a shopping mall during my lunch break and I was absolutely out of inspiration. After a few doodles, I went to get myself some caffeine.
While I was waiting for my double expresso I found inspiration...and it was in the shape of a couple of girls slurping soft drink a few tables away from Starbucks. One was an Asian young woman carefully typing a text on her mobile and the other one was a Caucasian girl staring absent mindedly through the window.
I know the whole thing sounds uneventful, but I started to think about the amazing diversity of peoples and cultures here in London. I also thought of the fantastic contribution that the Indian sub-continent has given to England in terms of culture, people and of course: food! (I just went to a really good Indian restaurant last weekend and I`ve been high on Curry since ) I started to sketch after work on that day, wanting to celebrate diversity and tolerance.
I also found the scene very Ying-Yang and I wanted to reflect that polarity in the shading and attitudes. I was going to call this one "Curry + Chips" but that name sounded a bit like "Greasy Fish Bar" ... "Apples + Mangoes" is a bit more delicate and appropiate for a couple of beautiful young women!
