Okay. So I was asked how I learned how to do expressions the way I do. Twilight Samurai? I thank you. But let's see...
Well, when drawing and trying to convey feelings in your characters, many things must be taken into consideration: What they are feeling, body language, and of course facial composition. Right now I'm going to try to explain the facial composition part. Not in full, but in a way that makes SOME sense of that picture up ^^^there^^^.
If you hadn't noticed already, this is a very quick set of drawings. Two circles, to make the eyes, and then a line--for the mouth. It's that simple. Once you play with the line for the mouth and lids of the eyes, different expression spawn. Try it out. There are tons more expressions that aren't on here.
Once you get the basic form of the expression you want to convey, you must then utilize your knowledge of how the facial structure works. How the mouth looks in certain ways.. How the eyes change in this direction or that angle.. The nose and eyebrows also play a large role. Experimenting by moving these different parts of the face around broadens your imaginary library of expressions. Since I've played with this for some time, I have a pretty descent sized inventory to pick from. Also, looking at how professionals draw in manga helps A LOT! Don't draw the same as them, though. Find out what they are doing to make the picture look like it does. Find out how to steal their "powers", not their work. :}
