This Triptych contains three separate sketches: "Pop Japan - 1985" (left), "R&B UK - 2007" (centre) and "Hardcore USA - 1999" (right).
"Pop Japan -1985" tries to embody the spirit of 1980`s J-Pop at its infancy, at a time when Japanese Pop Culture taking over the world was unthinkable. Cute, quirky and sickly sweet, this piece represents good times gone by.
"R&B UK - 2007" was influenced by the current trend of Girl Band/Rhythm and Blues that currently keeps worldwide media on stranglehold. I believe the eye of this musical storm centres in London, as I hear that british acts are quite popular abroad. I tried to base this character on Mutya Buena because to me she represents this trend really well (I tried the lip piercing but didn`t happen in the end!!). Ethereal and soulful, this piece represents the future to come
"Hardcore USA - 1999" was influenced by my experiences in concerts and shows back when I lived in America. I remember the sweat and fury in the moshpits: absolute freedom and dangerous madness under the deafening sound of distorted guitars and blasting drums. This piece stands for the present we live in: on-the-go, frenetic and in constant motion.
Two more things: I know the dates in the title are somewhat anachronic, it`s part of the piece and the sketches are not organized chronologically - they have been arranged in a way that resembles Triptychs in Roman, Byzantine and Early Medieval Art. These pieces were bound to obscurity, but I wanted to give them a second chance.
