This is what I envision happening to Asuka if she never married and had kids...She's a powerful sage but rather lonely.
The growing grass and path behind her symbolize the more fertile path that she could have taken. Her shadow sits over the path because it is well and truly behind her. It is winter because that is the season of death and old age. The mushrooms however mean that she still has not given up on a happier time and her inner child.
