COMMENCE HUGE DESCRIPTION FOR THE wait for it FIFTH TIME!
I feel like when I graduated I lost all motivation to ink and color and just sketched...and...geez...stuff...
Yeah so post-graduating saw me not thinking deeply and just kinda drawing. 2013 was weird in general; I had bouts of writing and bouts of insanity and bouts of 'is this worth posting I dunno'. I sketched a hella lot, though. So with all that, let's see what we've got:
- January - Iris the Psychosona
There was like nothing in this month (I was off writing, I realize). Soooo...Iris. You're up.
- February - Simak Warriors (Schoolwork, Illustration)
To be fair, this version is the more polished from that came a couple months down the line, but hey, the brunt of the work was done...actually in January. SIGH project cycles. I really enjoyed concepting this piece and thinking way too deeply about the CMYK people, inventing backstories and personalities and all that jazz. Maybe someday I can do something further with it.
- March - The Three Faces of Adam (Schoolwork, Illustration)
This month nearly drove me insane because I decided to take advantage of the extra week spring break gave me and pump out three pieces for class. And I am quite happy with how all three came out! Mango and the horse guys share things themeatically but haven't really been fleshed out beyond that. This piece took so dang long to do and thankfully didn't change a whole lot between initial completion and portfolio implementation.
- April - The Space Farmer (Schoolwork, Illustration)
This was fun since it was an elaborate re-hash of a painting from the previous year...which was also on my 2012 art summary! Sketching took so long that all the coloring occurred over the course of maybe four days, and this was a monster to color and get looking right. I'm quite happy with how it turned out and how glow-tastic it is.
- May - How Do You Take Your Tea?
I started this piece waaay back in December as a sketch, but didn't pick it up again until the lull before graduation. Alternate title being "square headed Europeans in tight pants", it's a rather fitting tribute to the folks occupying my mental space (though not so much Layton - I like him, just not in the same way as 11 or Sasha).
- June - Desert Pirate Sketchdump
Can we remember how absolutely wrecked I was this month due to gallbladder surgery? That whole saga started at the end of May and didn't leave me unburdened until early July, so the fact that I did anything at all is a miracle. Though I do like these and of course had fun drawing them. That seems to be a common theme with my stuff.
- July - JUMP JUMP JUMP
I've been trying reeeeeally hard to pretend like I didn't draw tons of Psychonauts stuff last year but that's the biggest lie and I can't keep hiding it. 2013 was the year of fanart, and it mainly started because I needed stress relief from my last semester of college. I ended up purely enjoying it and finding a fun group of 'nauts fans on Tumblr. I genuinely like this piece quite a lot and wouldn't be against showing it to people...but, well, fanart.
- August - Too Old To Be A Camper
WOW, an August where I made more than three things?! Too bad nothing was very complicated! This was just some fun shenanigans of self-inserting oneself into being camper at Whispering Rock...but I'm too old to go there. Sigh.
- September - Brazilian Kiiiick (goes with German Paaawnch; both on the same sheet here)
So guess who got a job and learned how those eat your life! After a few weeks of not drawing, I deliberately set myself down to just make something, and the result was this and its partner sketch. This is essentially where you can see me not doing very complicated things, merely sketching, in order to just make stuff.
- October - Walk Walk Fashion Baby
Well, then I made a colored thing, but you know what I mean. While I did a few things this month that are probably more...interesting?, there's something striking about this piece that I still really enjoy. I've tried a few times to copy the same layer styles and effects for other pieces, but they just only work on this one. And that's fine. You rock it, Sasha.
- November - Coffeeamore
Woops guess who went back to sketching a lot. Ah well. I did a lot of the sepia sketches in '13 and that's because they look classy and are brutally simple to do. And they go well with attractive fictional European professors drinking coffee.
- December - May Your Holidays Be...Bright
You make weird stuff in fast bursts, and this one had a time limit in order to get printed in time for the holidays. Maybe the best way to round off my year of changes and brutal simplification is extreeeeeme sparkles. Guess I'm down with that.
Looking back on the previous summary o' art, I realize I ended up fulfilling the things I talked about: I did graduate college, I did do a lot of job searching, and I did get employed as an actual artist. Man...I don't know where this year is headed. But here's to 2014!
