So this is my day eleven drawing for Inktober. I wanted to talk a little about what is and what made me decide to draw it. First of all, a lot of you probably knpw I'm a big fan of the new Ms Marvel, she's one of my favorite superheroes. So this is fan art, but it's also a message. I try not to get political on TheOtaku, but this is important, so bear with me.
I'm absolutely horrified and disgusted with the American public's reaction to the refugee crisis in Syria. I hear people (not anyone on TheOtaku, as far as I know, but lots of people who should know better ) say we shouldn't let refugees into our country because of concerns for national security. The idea that we should leave innocent men, women, and chlildren to die because of a slim chance that some of them might me terrorists, is first of all cowardly snd shameful, secondly has been disproved, and third is an excuse for racism and religious intolerance. Here's the thing: when I hear people say that Muslims and Middle Easterners are dangerous and a threat to American society, I just think, "A hundred years ago, they were saying the same thing about my people." I am half Jewish, half Irish, and a practicing Catholic. It wasn't so long ago they were saying that Jews shouldn't be allowed to come here. That Catholics were under the control of the Vatacin, and therefore dangerous. That the Irish were no good and a threat to society. It wasn't so long ago that we were turning away Jewish refugees who were trying to escape the Holocaust, because thee was the chance that some of them mifht be spies and saboteurs. Any of this ringing a bell? I don't care what the reasoning is, turning away Syrian refugee is pure xenophobia. Discrimination againtst Muslim Americans has gone on long enough. No ethnic or religious group should be made to feel unwelcome in this country. We are better than this.
I am ashamed of my country for the way we have treated Muslims and Middle Easterners. I don't know many Muslims, but I just want to say that as a Catholic,I stand by you in this time of turmoil. I an era of hatred, I say respond with love.
(The title is a bit obvious. I just stole it from the U2 song. Hey, it works. :) Speaking of which, check out the video of the U2 video where they yell at Trump, it's perfect. I'd link to it, but I'm on my phone and it doesn't handle YouTube links well. Oh, and go read Ms Marvel. You'll be the happiest comic book nerd in the world. )
