My last entry I redrew a horrible OC from way back in the dark days of middle school. For my second entry, here's something a bit more recent. I did this drawing of Star-lord and Shadowcat about a year ago (is that all?). Let's break down the differences between the two versions:
The characters-I was really into the 2016 run of the Guardians of the Galaxy comic back when I drew this piece. I don't know why, it was terrible. Anyway, just for the hell of it I put my OCs Sean and Blue in here this time around.
The anatomy-Good gravy, was my anatomy bad. I think it's improved a bit now.
The colors-I remember being really proud of how well I colored this drawing. The fact that this was good by my standards says a lot. I still have a lot to work on in terms of coloring and shading, but I've definitely improved.
The inking-These days I use a Sharpie and two sizes of gel pens for a variety of line width in my drawings. Back then, though, it didn't even occur to me to vary my lines. I just used a cheap ballpoint pen to do everything.
The background--this is probably the biggest difference between the two drawings. Back in the day I had a very limited mindset when it came to art materials. Pens were for drawing lines, colored pencils were for coloring in the lines. If I wanted to make a space background, I did it with a colored pencil scribbled all over the paper. It was a pain in the butt to do, and it looked terrible. Now, I had spent a lot of time making this picture and I didn't want to waste it by putting in a lousy background. So instead I pasted the drawing on to a background I made in Photoshop. It was a pretty crappy background, just a gradient purple canvas. I somehow couldn't figure out how to use the paint tool to make little white dots for stars (how dumb was I?
) so I put a premade star effect on the canvas with Picmonkey. It was progress in that I was trying new things, but it was not attractive. These days I have a few different ways of drawing space-type backgrounds, but the one I use most is the crosshatching that I used here. I feel like I could make a Photoshop space background now if I really tried.
So yeah, that's that. Enjoy!
