1. Individuals with similar needs, values, or goals tend to converge to form a single group.
2. People who join social groups tend to be high in personal efficacy (the belief that through personal involvement, they can make a difference)
3. Relative deprivation – those who join social movements tend to be people who have higher expectations but who have not succeeded in realizing these expectations
- Egoistic deprivation – their personal attainments are below their expectations
- Fraternal deprivation – their group’s attainments are below their expectations
